[Libs-Or] Call for applications: Instruction workshop for academic libraries in Oregon

Funded by a generous Oregon LSTA grant, we are pleased to announce a train-the-trainer workshop in transparent design for library instruction in academic libraries.

Transparent design calls for instructors to explicitly discuss with students the purpose of an assignment or activity, the specific tasks that students will be asked to perform, and how students' success will be evaluated. Transparent instruction design has been cited as an important method of ensuring that students who are unfamiliar with the traditional structure and culture of higher education (such as first-generation students) have the same understanding of academic expectations as do all other students. Much of the published work available about transparent design focuses on semester or quarter-length courses, rather than the single sessions that are more characteristic of library instruction. This workshop will provide the opportunity for hands-on development of library instructional materials that demonstrate the principles of transparent design. The resulting instructional materials will be hosted in an open access repository.

The workshop will be held online, led by Melissa Bowles-Terry:


*         Wednesday October 21

*         Wednesday October 28

*         Wednesday November 4

4-5pm each day, with work completed between sessions.

Attendance is limited to 20 in order to provide a more personal learning experience, but attendees are expected to share their learning with others. Each attendee at the initial workshop will be required to design and deliver a mini-workshop this spring in their region of Oregon to present transparent design principles. These mini-workshops will receive funding for supplies, as well as a $250 stipend for presenters to develop the material and deliver the workshop. (Workshops may be in person or online, depending on the current public health restrictions in the attendee's location at the time).

Applications are open to any academic library employee in the state of Oregon. To apply, please use the following form to submit your name, institution, role in your workplace, and a short statement (no more than 250 words) that addresses your instruction/teaching experience and your existing knowledge or experience with transparent design (this will be provided to the facilitator to aid in workshop preparation). If we receive more than 20 submissions, we will choose a group of participants that will provide the greatest diversity of type of institution and location in the state. Preference will be given for applicants actively engaged in instruction at their institution. Applications are due by Tuesday, June 30th.

Workshop Leader:

Melissa Bowles-Terry is the Associate Director of the Faculty Center at UNLV, where she coordinates programming to support faculty teaching, research, and career development. She was previously Head of Educational Initiatives at UNLV Libraries. Melissa earned a Master's degree in Library and Information Science at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Melissa's research interests include the impact of libraries on student success, assessment of student learning, and information literacy instruction. She is the co-author of Classroom Assessment Techniques for Librarians, published by ACRL in 2015. Melissa is a member of the Association of College and Research Libraries Immersion faculty, a national training program for librarians who teach and assess student learning.
