Oregon will likely receive a 6th Congressional District if there is full participation in the 2020 Census. This means more representation at the federal level and potentially more resources allocated to Oregon, including those provided by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Providing support for Census participation is one way libraries can help assure Oregon gets the federal representation and resources it deserves.
Oregon households will start receiving invitations to participate in the 2020 Census on March 12. With the new option to fill out the form online, libraries will be on the front lines to answer questions. Now is a great time to review some of the support resources available.

It’s leap year, so calendars are on our minds. You might think that the only calendars published by state government agencies are things like Executive Appointments Journal and Calendar of the Senate<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=14eb648dec&e=0d2401e925>, which describes legislative action. But state agencies have also published a number of wall calendars.
The Department of Human Services used student art for its Problem Gambling Awareness Calendar<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=ca27c9e5f0&e=0d2401e925>.
The Department of Geology and Mineral Industries used a remote sensing technique called LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) to produce these unusual views of Oregon landscapes<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=bd863beff0&e=0d2401e925>.
If you’re a fan of backyard chickens, you’ll enjoy this poultry calendar<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=ad1f75c7b6&e=0d2401e925> from the Department of Agriculture.
The most unusual state agency calendar in our collection was published in 1919 by the State Industrial Accident Commission. The World’s Greatest Change Taker<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=271bd774d1&e=0d2401e925> is World War I-era propaganda, using Kaiser Wilhelm as a sometimes macabre example of an unsafe employee. (This calendar was designed by the National Safety Council). Please note that some images contain cartoon violence.
All of these items are part of the Oregon Government Publications<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=f659adce62&e=0d2401e925> digital collection.
Oregon Flora painting by Charlotte Mish Loaned to the Tacoma Art Museum

The State Library’s beloved painting, “Oregon Flora” by Portland artist Charlotte Mish is on loan to the Tacoma Art Museum from February 22 through August 16. It is part of the exhibit, Forgotten Stories: Northwest Public Art of the 1930s, which features art from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington created by federal arts projects artists sponsored by the WPA as a part of the New Deal. Mish, who created a number of murals for the Oregon Art Project, based the flowers depicted in Oregon Flora on botanical illustrations by Helen Gilkey. The painting had recently been in storage awaiting renovations to the State Library’s meeting rooms. It has been on long-term loan from the federal government since 1942.
