[Libs-Or] Accessible Computer Station

Hi Alexander,

I would ask for advice about modification, software, tech, etc. from Access Technologies, who are a non-profit who loan equipment and software to people with disabilities in Oregon. It is my understanding that they will advise libraries on creating what you are envisioning. Since they regularly train and demonstrate assistive technologies to those with vision, hearing and other needs they should have useful advice on assessing what your community needs and how to provide it to them.

Hi Alex,

It's great that you are doing this and thinking about it ahead of time. Here are some recommendations because the microsoft accessibility features only go so far:

    * Install [ https://www.nvaccess.org/ | NVDA ] or another screen reader.
    * Install [ https://thinksmartbox.com/product/dwell-clicker/ | Dwell ] software or something that will enable a patron to hover over an icon and click for someone. This is helpful for people with limited hand mobility.
    * Headset with a microphone for Speech to Text
    * Large Screen Monitor
    * Trackball mouse and/or joystick and/or large touch pad
    * High Contrast and Large Print keyboard
    * A portable reading light for patrons who need to see their paper or book better. Maybe you don't need it at the station but one should be available for use.
Make sure there is information on how to use the Accessibility Microsoft features for staff to reference and staff know how to use the peripherals.

This is really just a start. I'm sure there will be some other great suggestions posted. Reach out if you would like more information.

Warmly,

Hello,

I’ve been looking into setting up an accessible computer station in our library. Has anyone else done this? To what degree? Beyond Windows10’s already embedded options. Larger monitor? Special Software? Special Hardware? Curious what anyone else may have done. Did you make adjustments based on community needs?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You,
