ACRL-Oregon offers free webinars on topics relevant to academic library
staff. Our upcoming webinar is “Introducing the Information Literacy
Reflection Tool” and will be presented by Sara Robertson from Portland
Community College, Michele Burke from Chemeketa Community College, Kim
Olson-Charles from the University of Western States, and Reed Mueller from
Bushnell University on April 6th, 2021, at 2pm Pacific.


*Introducing the Information Literacy Reflection Tool*

Join us for a look at the Information Literacy Reflection Tool
<https://ilreflection.org/> (ILRT). The tool consists of statements that
prompt students to reflect on their Information Literacy practices. When
used thoughtfully, this kind of metacognitive assessment approach positions
students as experts on their own learning, and holds promise for
transferring skills and knowledge.

Seeing a need for teaching tools that help build metacognition, a research
team of Oregon librarians and educators have created a metacognitive
self-assessment that is derived from threshold concepts articulated in the
ACRL Framework for Information Literacy. As part of three years of research
and testing, the instrument was used in fall 2019 with students in 20
foundational writing courses, and several first-year-experience courses in
a community college setting. In this webinar the researchers will describe
their mixed methods research and discuss implications for use of the
Information Literacy Reflection Tool.

Session participants will have the opportunity to discuss some ways it
could be useful in teaching, and critically reflect on its potential to
empower IL learners and move us towards a more just and equitable
curriculum.


*Sara Robertson*
Sara has been a member of the library faculty at Portland Community College
since 2011, where she’s been active in helping to develop the information
literacy instruction program, and college-wide learning assessment efforts.
Sara holds a MLIS from the iSchool at the University of Washington, and a
BA from The Evergreen State College, where she focused her studies in
critical pedagogy.

*Michele Burke*
Michele is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Chemeketa Community
College in Salem, Oregon where she has been a member of the faculty since
2008. She loves collaborating on Information Literacy initiatives across
institutions, including vertical and horizontal articulation work, and is a
long standing active member of both the Oregon Writing and English Advisory
Committee, and the Information Literacy Advisory Group of Oregon.

*Kim Olson-Charles*
Kim joined the University of Western States in 2019 as the Head of Library
Public Services: Reference, Instruction and Access Services. She currently
teaches Information Mastery to Doctor of Chiropractic students. Prior to
her position at University of Western States, Kim was an Assistant
Professor, Outreach and Instruction Librarian at Concordia University.
Prior to changing careers, Ms. Olson-Charles worked for 25 years in
behavioral research holding a range of positions from being a research
assistant and coder to her last position with the University of Oregon
Department of Psychology as research project coordinator.

*Reed Mueller, PhD*
Reed serves as the Program Director for Undergraduate Psychology and as a
Professor at Bushnell University. Before this appointment, he served as the
Chair of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department at Concordia
University-Portland and was a co-founder of the Lab for Community and
Social Change there. Work out of the Concordia University lab included the
evaluation of a collective impact initiative designed to create safer,
healthier, and more educated communities by closing the opportunity gap for
the most vulnerable children and families in the community. At present,
Reed is pursuing research at the intersection of information and scientific
literacy with community discourse.
