The OLA Public Library Division Board would like you to join us for our quarterly training next Friday, October 29, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. This training is open to all Oregon public library employees, so please join us! All PLD trainings are virtual for now, so please join via Zoom (info below). We hope to see you there!
Program:
In today’s hyper-partisan environment, every library worker needs to be well-prepared to handle challenges not only to library materials, but to programs, displays, and policies such as Meeting Room Use. Join representatives of the OLA Intellectual Freedom Committee to learn about recent trends, core ALA policy statements, new interpretations of the Library Bill of Rights, hate speech, visits from 1st Amendment Auditors and law enforcement, best practices, and resources available for staff and administrators.
Presenters:
Emily O’Neal, Co-Chair for the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Committee, Deschutes Public Library
Emily has been a member of the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Committee since October 2020, and began serving as co-chair for the OIFC for the fiscal year of 2021-2022. Though a relatively new member to the OIFC, Emily has been a champion supporter of intellectual freedom within her role as Technical Services Manager at Deschutes Public Library. Additionally, Emily currently serves on the Technical Services Round Table, serving as chair in 2018-2019 and again 2020-2021, she was a previous member of the EDI Anti-Racism Committee, serving as a guest writer to the EDI Anti-Racism toolkit, as well as supported the Libros for Oregon subcommittee of REFORMA in creating Spanish language cataloging standards. Emily relocated to Bend in April of 2016 from Steamboat Springs, Colorado where she was formerly the Technical Services and Collection Management Librarian for Bud Werner Memorial Library. Prior to Colorado, Emily was the Library Operations Manager of Collections for the University of New Mexico. When not managing a Technical Services department, Emily enjoys teaching hip-hop dance or spending time outdoors hiking, snowboarding, rock climbing and paddle boarding with her husband and two dogs.
Perry Stokes, Co-Chair for the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Committee, Baker County Library District
Stokes got his start with Intellectual Freedom issues in 2005 in the wake of CIPA in Seattle as chair of the KCLS Internet Filtering Committee. Since 2007, he has worked in rural northeastern Oregon as Library Director for Baker County Library District. He has served on advisory boards for Oregon State Library’s LSTA Council, the Oregon Digital Library Consortium, and Answerland, helped shape OLA’s Vision 2020 strategic plan and the PLD Standards for Oregon public libraries, and continues to be active on the boards of Libraries of Eastern Oregon (LEO), Sage Library System, and Baker County Community Literacy Coalition. In off hours, he enjoys spending time with his wife, almost any movie on TCM, graphic novels, dystopian audiobooks, darkwave, funk, and punk music, outdoor adventures, and hoppy craft beer.
