Dear Colleagues,
Aubrey R. Watzek Library at Lewis & Clark College is pleased to announce
the 22nd Johannah Sherrer Memorial Lecture in Library Service, to be held
as a hybrid event on Friday, September 23 at 3pm. *"Challenging Bias
through Algorithmic Literacy" *will be presented by *Carolyn Caffrey*,
Associate Librarian and Information Literacy Coordinator at California
State University, Dominguez Hills.
* Algorithms play an influential role in how information is filtered,
mediated, and recommended in an online environment; yet their outsized role
is often unaddressed in current media literacy and information literacy
practices. As Virginia Eubanks so aptly phrases, algorithms can “automate
inequality” by hardwiring racial and gender bias into the artificial
intelligence frameworks that shape our lives. This talk will discuss
definitional considerations for algorithmic literacy and how we, as
non-coders, can mitigate bias and push for more transparent algorithms. The
presenter will also share practical examples for educators and library
professionals to incorporate algorithmic literacy into their own practice. *
For more information and to RSVP/register for the Zoom event, please see
the Sherrer Lecture information page.

We hope you are able to attend, and perhaps join us at Lewis & Clark for
the live event. A reception will follow the on-campus lecture.
Sincerely,
Elaine Hirsch
