Greetings, Oregon Library Staff!
I am soft launching an informal meetup from 3:30-4:30 on the 2nd Wednesday of the month for libraries/library staff engaged in diversity, equity, and inclusion work - and any adjacent efforts that promote belonging, antiracism best practices and accessibility - at their library. These efforts can be inclusive of, but not limited to:
* Staff trainings and learning
* Community outreach and engagement
* Library policies and procedures
* Spaces and services
* Hiring and retention practices
* Internal and external communication
* Programming
The purpose of these meetups will be to connect with other libraries/staff working towards inclusive services, spaces, and practices. This space will be for peer-to-peer resource sharing, discussing challenges, celebrating successes, and offering support for one another in this work. There will be no formal facilitation, training, or instruction during this time, aside from what is shared and learned with and from the collective group.
My role in this group is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where folks can feel unencumbered to ask questions, work through challenges or gain insight from their colleagues wherever they are on their DEI journey. I also will take this time to listen and reflect on common barriers or themes happening to help guide me in curating resources and framing my approach to support all of you in ways that directly address the issues affecting libraries across our state.
While this group is for individuals at all levels of learning and/or action, participants must be willing to learn, grow and be open to discussions that challenge their perspectives. This is not a space for people to contest the validity or purpose of this work; cast judgment about where others are in their learning or unlearning; minimize, trivialize, or invalidate another's experience; or to allow one's own discomfort to distract or diminish the forward progress of this group.
If the need for more focused groups arises (i.e.: managers vs. front-line staff, or school libraries vs. academic libraries, etc.), we will utilize breakout rooms.
Thank you all for your time, and I look forward to having some of you join for the first meetup on Wednesday, January 8th. Details found below:
