[Libs-Or] IF Support Request - McMinnville School District

Dear Oregon library community.

In their Oct 8, 6:30pm meeting, the McMinnville School District board will
be voting on an appeal of the district's decision to retain 7 challenged
titles:

*Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl* (by Jesse Andrews Nolun)

*Beyond Magenta *(by Susan Kuklin)

*Looking for Alaska* (by John Green)

*Perfect* (by Ellen Hopkins)

*Smoke* (by Ellen Hopkins)

*Glass* (by Ellen Hopkins)

*Tricks* (by Ellen Hopkins)

While we believe the school board will be supportive of upholding
intellectual freedom and retaining these titles, there is an organized
group behind the challenges, and we don't know how much community support
they might have at the school board meeting. It would be great to have some
good support for retaining these titles, if you or your allies can do so.

The district has instructions for providing public input
<https://www.msd.k12.or.us/school-board/public-input/>, including the
options to provide *written comment *or to provide *comment over zoom*
(must fill out the form by 3pm that day for zoom comments). Contact the
district office at 503-565-4000 to get a zoom link.

For those who might wish to attend in person, the meeting will be in the
district office board room, 800 NE Lafayette Ave, McMinnville (Let Steve
Silver at stevesilver673 at gmail.com know if you're coming in person).

Talking points:

   - Thank the district for following established policy
   - The intended audience for these books is high school students
   - The books pass the Miller test and are not obscene from a legal
perspective (passages have been quoted out of context in the complaints)
   - Whatever positive comments you have about specific titles or the
   freedom to read in general

Thanks in advance to any who are willing and able to provide support.
- IFC
