Hi Colin,

I saw your message on Libs-Or and I've recently had recent success with genealogical programs at my library. I held my first program in April, "Introduction to Genealogical Website." Attached is my handout for that. We had 28 people.

At the end of the program, I had several people approach asking how to even get started with genealogy. I held a class this last Saturday on how to get started with genealogy, and I had 17 people! This one was a shock to me. I thought I'd only get a few people, but it was an engaging program and people left wanting more.

I'm starting a series now. In February I will have a program that explores FamilySearch, and I'll do the same or Ancestry, Newspapers.com, and maybe Fold3. Our library does not subscribe to any services currently, but I've been doing genealogy for over 20 years and have subscriptions to the services. We are also fortunate enough to have the Genealogical Forum of Oregon as one of our Cultural Passes.

I am happy to answer any of your questions. I'd also love to know what you decide to do.

Good afternoon!

I'm at the start of some research into starting up a genealogy program at our library. The goal is to provide patrons access to genealogists to help them with their research. We have online resources we can direct people to, but having some kind of expert to talk to would be ideal.

I have a few ideas of what it could potentially look like, but I'd like to know what other libraries are doing with genealogy.
