The role:

Our regional safety and wellness managers lead their region's safety initiatives based on unique geographical and business complexities.

In this role, you will be responsible for creating, adapting and implementing safety practices aligned with wellness and the specific needs of Region 4. You will identify, investigate, track and take action related to safety and wellness practices, injury prevention, opportunities, successes and recognition, violations and injuries as well as address recurring safety issues that lead to disciplinary actions.

A day in the life:

*       Manage, implement and continuously evaluate safety and incident prevention efforts, closely coordinated with wellness efforts.

*       Develop, maintain and revise ODOT Safety policies, procedures, guidelines and manuals.

*       Serve as a consultant to management on safety and wellness.

*       Conduct in depth investigations related to employee safety and wellness competence, communication issues and management failure to take action.

*       Respond to and make decisions regarding employee and/or manager complaints.

*       Interview managers and staff regarding disciplinary measures, and report safety noncompliance.

*       Develop, analyze, and present statistics and trend analysis of prevention, injury, incident, and wellness data.

*       Conduct or coach employees participating in inspections of ODOT facilities, for safety and ergonomics.

*       Frequent exposure to a wide variety of working conditions and weather.

*       Travel is involved, requiring travel to various offices and locations throughout the region and state.

*       Ability to climb steep terrain, steps and ladders, kneel, stoop and crouch while conducting on site evaluations frequently.

  *   Occasional exposure to health hazards and ability to wear protective equipment against falls, dust, chemicals and noise extremes including wearing of respirator which may exclude having facial hair. This exposure may include exposure to traffic, work crews and various equipment.

What we need:

*       A bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, or related field AND

*       Two (2) years of experience in workers' compensation insurance loss prevention or as an occupational health and safety representative in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional or agricultural setting.
OR

*       Five (5) years of experience in occupational health and safety consultation work in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional, or agricultural setting or in workers' compensation insurance loss prevention.

*       Working knowledge of transportation maintenance, operations and construction.
