Hi! One of you asked a great question about the free summer food program, and think many of you may want to hear the answer.

First, find out if you are eligible for the USDA's free Summer Food Service Program by using this online tool<http://www.fns.usda.gov/areaeligibility>. If you aren't eligible, then delete this email now. If you are, read on!

Q: I am trying to make sense of this. Is the Hunger Free Oregon grant the same as 'Libraries & Museums Serving Free Summer Meals'?

A: The Libraries & Museums Serving Free Summer Meals<https://cc.readytalk.com/cc/s/registrations/new?cid=n2ltg4m34c1p> is a webinar you can watch to learn/talk about what it's like for a public library to be a USDA's Summer Food Service Program site. Hunger Free Oregon is a non-profit that helps organizations become USDA's Summer Food Service Program site and/or site sponsors. One way they are helping is to provide grants to organizations that want to become a USDA's Summer Food Service Program site and/or site sponsors. I suggest doing both. Watch the webinar to figure out if you want to become a USDA's Summer Food Service Program site. If you do, then also apply for a grant to become a USDA's Summer Food Service Program site-guidelines and application attached. You can become a site without the grant, learn how here<http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=4335>.

Essentially, there is a hunger epidemic that is especially acute during the summer. About 5 out of 6 kids who eat free or reduced lunch during the school year are going hungry during the summer-they're not eating at USDA's Summer Food Service Program sites during the summer. Therefore lots of organizations, like Hunger Free Oregon and the national Institute of Museum and Library Services, are doing different things to achieve the same two goals, 1) get more organizations become USDA's Summer Food Service Program sites, and 2) help low-income youth find and eat at those sites.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Katie
