This summer, join NASA every Monday at 2:00 p.m. Eastern for an exciting science lesson and hands-on demonstration. Exciting STEM topics such as "Living in Space", "Our Solar System", and "On the Moon" will start in June.

Program Idea: The Amazing Space Race!

One of our library assistants suggested that we have a library mascot over the summer and hide it around the library, or around town, and that we take pictures of it. Many libraries do something like this on Facebook, and it’s a great way to engage with patrons. I liked that idea, but thought of a better way to fit it into the summer reading theme of “Universe of Stories”.

I asked my director to buy an inflatable astronaut suit. Inflatable suits are always hilarious, and are definitely eye-catching. It would also be something we could use it for school visits, story times, or just hanging out in the library.

Every Friday, we will post a picture to our social media of the astronaut somewhere in our village. The park, a local business, some place easily recognizable. Once it’s up, patrons will have a set amount of time to get to the location. Once they are there, they have to try and find the astronaut’s backpack. A staff member will be onsite to help open the backpack once it is found, and to ensure it does not walk away.

What’s inside the backpack will change every week! One week it will be a craft, one week it will be stickers, one week it will be photo booth props for selfies. We plan on putting more than enough supplies in there for everyone, so it’s not really a race. It’s more of a way to go on an outdoor scavenger hunt and engage with the library in a nontraditional format!

2019 Teen Video Challenge (TVC)!

Looking for an easy program to share with your teens? The 2019 TVC has been streamlined to help make participating in this contest easier than ever!

  *   Instead of state winners, there will be 5 national winners. Just have your teens submit a link to their video.
  *   The program will accept submissions June 1-Aug 2, 2019, so that the program can be incorporated into summer programs (it’s still a great opportunity to partner with schools with video production classes or clubs; students can produce the videos as a class project and submit them in June!)
  *   Videos will be limited to 60 seconds, making this a much more doable project for small teams.
  *   Permission and model release forms will only be required from the winning entries (completing the forms is a requirement to receive prizes and acknowledgement).
  *   The TVC Ad-Hoc Committee will convene a judging panel from CSLP partners and members.
  *   Video uploads will not be limited to YouTube and Vimeo; rather, teens can upload to the social media outlet of their choice.

Increasingly, public libraries are feeding hungry bodies as well as hungry minds during the summer – and throughout the year. The CSLP’s ad hoc Child and Community Well-Being committee is developing resources to support and encourage library participation in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program and other initiatives to help kids and teens stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. These resources include the Libraries and Summer Food<https://www.cslpreads.org/libraries-and-summer-food/> page on the CSLP website, manual resources and downloadables for upcoming programs, and a series of stories showcasing the experiences of libraries around the country.

Summer Food @ the Caroline County Public Library (Maryland)

The Caroline County Public Library, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, serves a rural county of 33,000 people with three branches.  Since the summer of 2016, we have participated in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to provide healthy food to our young community members during summer break.

Building on our existing partnership with our local school system, we were first able to offer a daily snack at our Central Library in Denton in 2016.  We were then able to expand the program to provide a full lunch in 2017 and 2018.  Immediately after implementing the program, we noticed benefits.  Taking a break to have a nutritious snack or meal provided children and teens an opportunity to not only nourish their bodies, but to connect with library staff.  We experienced a drop in the need to correct behavior issues and to send children out of the library.  Our staff was able to engage young people more easily in drop-in educational and creative projects, and to build mentoring relationships which have lasted over the years.  It is our firm belief that summer food programs are a model of the transformative mission of the modern public library.

We are looking forward to continuing our Summer Food program at our Denton location in 2019, and in the future to expanding the program to our smaller branches.  In 2018, we saw a large growth in the program due to increased local marketing efforts of the library and our partners.  In our small community, we served nearly 1,000 meals over the course of the 10-week program.  We encourage any interested library to consider adding this program to their summer offerings. The Collaborative Summer Library Program’s website has a lot of information to offer library staff. What some may not realize is that CSLP has curated a list of resources related to inclusion. Want to learn about resources for those with a visual disability? Click on “Vision Disabilities.” Have a patron who is interested in adoption or foster care? Check out “Alternative Families.” There are a variety of “Inclusion Resources” right at your fingertips!

Launch into STAR Net’s “Summer of Space”!

The STAR Library Network (STAR Net) in partnership with CSLP and NASA have created a Summer of Space and A Universe of Stories resource webpage for public libraries across the country. This free, federally-funded NASA program provides access to webinars, space exploration activities, as well as the chance to win various giveaways including telescopes, NASA tactile books, and science books from Scholastic.
STAR Net’s “Summer of Space” website provides libraries with valuable tools to help your summer learning program achieve great success. Public Libraries can register and become eligible to receive additional STEM resources, build partnerships between libraries, and get in contact with space experts.

Resources Coming to a Library Near You!

From the 60th celebration of NASA culminating in the anniversary of the first manned mission to the Moon to CSLP’s summer learning program a Universe of Stories<https://www.cslpreads.org/>, STAR Net brings together a wide range of activities, resources, and webinars that enlighten as much as they inspire.  But while there are instructions on how to do a Night Sky viewing, or the best activity for a comet night, Summer of Space is also providing libraries with the chance to win books and supplies that enhance what they’re already offering – the opportunity for patrons to explore the science around them.

The book “Getting a Feel for Lunar Craters” was created with the NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI) and features tactile diagrams of the lunar surface designed to educate the blind and visually impaired about the wonders of Earth’s Moon.  Luciana Vega is a girl with a head for science and her heart set on exploring Mars.  Written by Erin Teagan, a biochemist turned author, she uses her own experiences in the STEM field to inspire young girls to follow their dreams.

For the first round, ask patrons to sort the cards in any way that they would like. Next, give them specific instructions for sorting the cards. This is a great icebreaker for adults – especially the temperature cards - and really prompts great conversation!
