Salem Boaters Beware of Navigation Obstructions on Willamette River

              The Oregon State Marine Board urges boaters who are recreating on the Willamette River near downtown Salem to use caution and keep a sharp lookout for waterway obstructions just below the surface near Wallace Marine Park.
            Several logs are snagged across the main channel against one of the railroad bridge's concrete supports (2nd from east), and a large root wad is located just upstream near the Wallace Marine Park boat ramp.  Polk County Marine Patrol Deputies placed marker buoys near the mostly-submerged root wad and will continue monitoring the obstructions.
            On November 1, the City of Salem will be removing the Wallace Marine Park's boarding floats in preparation of seasonal high water and officials anticipate that winter rains will flush the debris downstream to settle along the river's edge.  Natural mitigation is preferred because it helps maintain suitable marine life habitat and nutrient balance for the river.
