[OYAN] Movement-Based Programs in Oregon Public Libraries

I had an email exchange with Noah about the following survey and learned that he’s interested in learning about youth services programs! The programs in the survey are pretty fitness specific like yoga and Zumba, but he said he’s also interested in other programs that you plan intentionally to get youth moving.

Some examples might be:

·         Zombies –vs- Humans (fast walking and ducking around to avoid getting tagged)

·         Jedi Training (sword fighting with pool noodles)

·         Parachute Play with toddlers (gross motors skill development)

Questions to help you figure out what is/isn’t a movement based program:

·         Is one of your goals for this program to get kids moving? If it is, then definitely yes!

·         Is movement just a nice byproduct of this program? If it is, then probably not.

·         If movement is just a nice byproduct, how much are kids moving in the program? If they’re mostly moving, then probably yes.

·         If your storytime include 2-3 movement activities, but kids are mostly listening/reading and crafting/working, then no.

There isn’t a hard and fast rule, you’ll mostly just have to go with your gut. That’s okay!

Hello everyone

I am announcing a new project: "Let’s Move! Libraries.” At the project website — http://www.letsmovelibraries.org/ — you will find information on movement-based programs in public libraries throughout North America (think yoga/tai chi/Zumba in the library, StoryWalks, music and movement, walking groups, etc.). The overall goal of this project is to strengthen work already underway in public libraries that seeks to get our communities up and moving.
