Grrr. I forgot to remove from the subject line the part about questions to ask when using videos for instruction. Oh well. Since I accidentally included that, I’ll share the related info, too. Sorry about the extra email. :-)
Christopher Drew brings up some great points in his eLearn Magazine article, “Four Questions to Ask When Using YouTube in the Classroom.” Ultimately, Drew emphasizes that since YouTube (and other) videos are used for instruction, we need to make sure they are pedagogically sound and that they engage students. After reviewing many videos, including those from Khan Academy, Drew feels like many are focused on lower-level thinking and passive delivery. “Anyone considering using YouTube videos as cognitive tools for learning should therefore judge the quality of videos the same way they would judge real-life teachers. Considerations should include whether the video is treating students like sponges by feeding them information they should passively absorb, or treating them like active, critically thinking knowledge constructors…” He offers four questions to consider when deciding on the educational value of videos, and he gives an example of a video that addresses those questions well.

Please pardon the cross-posting.
Hi,
Over the weekend, I learned that the winners of the 2018 American Indian Library Association's Youth Literature Award have been announced. “Every two years, the American Indian Library Association's Youth Literature Award committee selects books to receive its awards in three categories: Picture Book, Middle Grade Book, and Young Adult Book. From books published in 2016 and 2017, these are the winners! An important note: every single one is from a small press--where editors know what they're doing…”
