As you may know, the Oregon Association of School Libraries (OASL) is a division of the Oregon Library Association (OLA). Under the direction of Kate Jacobson Dutro, Newsletter Editor, OASL published the inaugural issue of a new monthly newsletter. With Library Legislative Day coming up on February 15th, the issue's theme is advocacy. I encourage you to check it out. Thanks to Kate and contributors for the excellent and engaging information.

If you're interested in reading the newsletter, you can browse the publication's website<https://sites.google.com/oasl.olaweb.org/oasl-newsletter/home>, see the email below, or subscribe<https://olaweb.us14.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=21d249e273ce62b1098e37669&id=447e9345ea> to receive future emails. Anyone is welcome to subscribe; you do not have to be an OASL member. That said, I'll put in a plug for those with connections to school libraries to join OASL<https://ola.memberclicks.net/join-us>. It's a mighty group that does many great things.

Thanks,
Jen

January is traditionally the month for renewal and rejuvenation in whatever form that takes for each of us. Are you setting a new reading goal for the year? Making a commitment to volunteer for the OASL fall conference planning committee (hint, hint, wink, wink)? For OASL, that can look like the restart of our monthly newsletter spearheaded by Kate Dutro! Thank you, Kate, for taking this on. Each month will have a different theme and for January that theme is advocacy.

For some of us advocacy can seem like a sensitive topic as employees in school libraries on the forefront of book challenges, or potential book challenges. However, advocacy can also mean advocating for fully-staffed school libraries, opportunities for professional development and conference attendance, starting a new book group or afterschool program, and maybe even a public library partnership. Did you know that OASL has an active, informed and motivated advocacy team? When Books Spark Controversy: Advocating for Best Practices for Schools and Districts
By: Jean Gritter, OASL Advocacy Chair

This article is based on a session at the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators 2022 Conference, co-presented by Jean Gritter (District Librarian, Greater Albany Public Schools), Jennifer Maurer (School Library Consultant, State Library of Oregon), and Kate Weber (Teacher-Librarian, Reynolds School District). The presentation was an outreach and advocacy effort to educate and inform school administrators about book challenges and the importance of certified teacher-librarians. The slide deck for this session can be found at https://bit.ly/COSA2022books<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Folaweb.us14.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D21d249e273ce62b1098e37669%26id%3Dde7b559af7%26e%3D216bb80681&data=05%7C01%7CJennifer.MAURER%40slo.oregon.gov%7C78386c3995f14bde4d8308daf8a728f5%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638095694094457017%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=aw7cpWz3cMsxFeKgoYjWxj1DFEHpq2Tds%2FGw%2FzjpXAg%3D&reserved=0>.

In today's polarized political climate, one of the greatest challenges facing librarians is upholding intellectual freedom and supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion in the face of parent and/or community objections to the content of books in their school's collection or curriculum. Even the most supportive school administrators must also remain attentive and responsive to the community in which their school exists. Currently in the United States, the majority of the books being challenged most frequently include characters and storylines that support equity and diversity, through their representation of students and families who have previously been grossly underrepresented.[1] When this happens, how do librarians and administrators balance these seemingly conflicting obligations, while still advocating for students' right to read? Elementary Teacher-Librarian of the Year
Grace Butler, Whitman Elementary School (Portland)
Favorite part of the job? My favorite parts of the job are having a space that everyone at my school likes to hang out in, especially the kids, and most especially the kids who really need a space that makes them feel safe and accepted.

District Librarian of the Year
Carrie Light, Lake Oswego School District
This month's theme is advocacy. How have you found success in advocating for your library? I invite principals and other administrators into the library as often as I can, and not just for big planned events. When school leaders see kids browsing for books, collaborating with each other, and using the library space, they see how integral the library is to daily school life.

Classified Staff Person of the Year
Gigi Michaels, Griffin Creek Elementary School (Medford)
Best advice you ever received? Be resourceful, if you want something for your library don't give up, there is always another way.
