Hello,
I’d love to hear about your weeding practices, especially for graphic novels or other high-circulating collections. Do you have a weeding schedule? Do you stick to it? Do you love weeding or is it a chore that is put off because it hurts to remove of all those beautiful materials? What does your library do with weeded materials?
I typically like weeding but some days I can be more nostalgic than others 😁I have a weeding schedule but sometimes collections need weeded sooner and other times I just can’t get to it that month. Most of our weeding goes to our Friends of the Library for book sales in person or through Amazon, or to our library outpost, a free lending library in a local neighborhood.
At North Plains, our graphic novel collection has great circulation, but our shelf space is limited, making it tough to get everything shelved from time to time. A year or two ago we moved the collection to optimize space, but we’re already seeing the issue again. Sometimes, I’ll post something silly on our social media, “check out 1 graphic novel, and get 2 free” kind of thing and it will help!
When I run a weeding report for our graphic novel collection with typical parameters, only a handful of titles come up. However, broadening the criteria to include higher-circulating items generates a list that’s overwhelmingly long. I’d appreciate any insights into how you handle this balance in your library 😊
Thank you,
Brianna Sowinski
