It was great seeing so many of you at the Public Library Directors meeting in Hillsboro last week. Thanks for the happy birthday! As I said, Katie and I visited with Kristin Gimble and below is a message that Katie sent to kids-lib with some things we can do to support Oregon's children and families.


Governor Kitzhaber recently launched StORytime, a new statewide literacy campaign to encourage families and caregivers to talk, sing, read, and play every day everywhere with their children from birth through third grade. The goal of the campaign is to address barriers that make it difficult for families and caregivers to engage their children in language and literacy activities. The desired outcome of the campaign is that all children will be reading at grade level by third grade.

Oregon library staff have the knowledge, experience, and community connections to make StORytime a success, and StORytime is an opportunity for libraries to benefit from statewide storytime marketing and public awareness campaign.

What can you do?

*         Use the StORytime logos, images, and templates<http://storytimeoregon.com/communities/community-partners/partner-downloads/> for your early literacy and early elementary school age programs just like you would use the Collaborative Summer Library Program clip-art for summer reading, but with no copyright Rules of Use to follow! You can use the art to make your own StORytime t-shirts, tote bags, bookmarks, etc. They have logos with different scenes in the 'O' to represent 5 different regions in Oregon! They'll have Spanish versions soon.

*         Sign-up to be a StORytime partner<http://storytimeoregon.com/communities/community-partners/become-a-partner/> and be listed on the StORytime website. Being a StORytime partner may help you develop or strengthen partnerships with your early learning hub, local preschools, schools, and other community organizations.

*         Like the StORytime facebook page<https://www.facebook.com/pages/Storytime-Oregon/395990343903448> to keep up-to-date on campaign activities and participate in the statewide StORytime conversation.

*         Start or participate in the conversation in your community about how local organizations and businesses can coordinate early language and literacy resources, services, and programs to implement StORytime in your community.
