Greetings!

(Please excuse the duplicate posting).

While this is coming from Michigan and aimed at Michigan libraries, it is available to ANY library staff/worker who would like to participate. Please read on!

The University of Michigan School of Information is launching a set of online courses aimed at managers or those interested in management in the public library setting. They have had a lot of internal discussions about how to support small and rural libraries in Michigan and this idea came out of those conversations both internally and with stakeholders. You can read more about the initiative here: http://ai.umich.edu/portfolio/public-library-management/

The first course in the initiative is FREE and is titled, "Public Library Management: Identifying Community Needs". In this course you can learn how to conduct research, surveys, and interviews as well as how to analyze data to better assess the local needs and wants of a public library community.

This one is a 4-week self-paced course taught by UM-SLIS faculty member Kristin Fontichiaro. Others will follow taught by familiar faces in the Michigan library community such as Larry Neal, Josie Parker as well as UM-SI faculty. This initiative will offer a quality options for library staff, both with and without an MLS, to gain additional skills and knowledge to use in their local setting.

Visit the course website for complete details and registration for the first course: https://www.edx.org/course/public-library-management-identifying-michiganx-publib601x#

This initiative will offer free access to the all courses as well as a minimum paid certificate option for those wanting credit for completing the course. The certificate cost for this first course is $49.

Another seven courses will follow covering topics such as management, budget, marketing, diversity, infrastructure, strategic planning and fundraising. Over the next several months the additional courses will be made available and new topics will be explored for future offerings.

We hope this adds a quality option for learning new skills to members of our library community, especially those that want more than a one-shot webinar and need a bit more in-depth learning but can't travel far.

Cheers!
