Hi,
A group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s School of Information Sciences received IMLS funding to learn about patron privacy practices in public libraries. They are seeking information from public library staff via a survey that should take about 20 minutes to complete. Everyone who takes the survey will have the option to receive a $20 gift card. I asked how long the survey will be open, and the response was “a few weeks at least.” More information is below and here: https://publish.illinois.edu/public-library-privacy-protection-forum/.
Thanks,
Jen

Subject: Patron Privacy in Public Libraries — Survey
If you work in a public library, please take our online survey to help us better understand public libraries’ approach to patron privacy.
School of Information Sciences<http://links.illinois.edu/f/a/_fJP1TFBxsgO-IxOWFKd1A~~/AAMFlAA~/RgRiQJ1AP0QdaHR0cHM6Ly9pc2Nob29sLmlsbGlub2lzLmVkdS9XA3NwY0IKYFhAGF5g3s8u1FIebGlicmFyeS5zdXBwb3J0QHNsby5vcmVnb24uZ292WAQAAAAE>
Dear Public Library Affiliates:
As you know, public libraries are essential to information access and the health of our communities. Librarians have historically been at the forefront of protecting patron privacy; however, recent technological innovations and the present political climate have made this commitment increasingly challenging. In fact, very little is known about what public libraries are currently doing to protect patron privacy. Therefore, I am pleased to invite you to participate in our online survey, which we developed to explore the measures public libraries use to ensure patron privacy and to identify the challenges they face on this aspect. The survey should take about 20 minutes to complete and, when you finish, we would like to offer you an optional gift card as thanks for your participation.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey focused on this topic. Your participation and feedback, therefore, is critical to our understanding of the current practices and the challenges that public libraries face in this area, as well as the strategies they may employ to provide patrons protection. This study is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the National Leadership Grant Forum. If you’d like to learn more about this project or its leadership, please click here.<http://links.illinois.edu/f/a/s2bUE1B6PNFXFTfu4cIUsA~~/AAMFlAA~/RgRiQJ1AP0RFaHR0cHM6Ly9wdWJsaXNoLmlsbGlub2lzLmVkdS9wdWJsaWMtbGlicmFyeS1wcml2YWN5LXByb3RlY3Rpb24tZm9ydW0vVwNzcGNCCmBYQBheYN7PLtRSHmxpYnJhcnkuc3VwcG9ydEBzbG8ub3JlZ29uLmdvdlgEAAAABA~~>
