New United for Libraries tip sheets provide guidance in the fight against censorship

The United for Libraries Intellectual Freedom Task Force has compiled two new resources to support Trustees and libraries to prepare for program, material, and access challenges.

"Terms and Definitions Related to Intellectual Freedom & Censorship<https://www.ala.org/united/sites/ala.org.united/files/content/IF/if_censorship_terms_definitions_united_for_libraries.pdf>" is a collection that clearly defines the language used relating to intellectual freedom and censorship challenges.

"Materials Challenges: Key Library Policies to Review and Revise<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMDQ1MTk3OCZwPTEmdT0xMTIxNzM2MTI2JmxpPTkyODg2NTUw/index.html>" reviews the key components of well-constructed and legal policies and describes the policies that a library should review and/or implement to prepare for the possibility of a materials challenge.

Both Tip Sheets are featured on the United for Libraries resource page "Trustee Resources for Program & Material Challenges<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMDQ1MTk3OCZwPTEmdT0xMTIxNzM2MTI2JmxpPTkyODg2NTUy/index.html>."

ALA's "Fight Censorship<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMDQ1MTk3OCZwPTEmdT0xMTIxNzM2MTI2JmxpPTkyODg2NTUz/index.html>" resource page includes further information on preparing for and responding to challenges, censorship legislation, how to support intellectual freedom, and more.

PLA to present March 4 virtual town hall on "Facing the Challenge: Intellectual Freedom in Libraries"

As libraries continue confronting unprecedented attacks on the freedom to read, the Public Library Association (PLA) invites you to participate in a virtual town hall to connect with colleagues. As those who have faced book banning attempts and related legislative efforts know, the experience is often isolating and stressful. During this free event, speakers will participate in facilitated conversations that explore effective responses to the coordinated attempts at censorship currently sweeping the nation. A moderated chat will follow, inviting attendees to pose questions and share insights based on personal experiences.
