It is very important to plan ahead this year to make sure you have enough time to fill out your Ready to Read Grant application and get it post marked August 31, 2013.
Why is it so important to plan ahead this year in particular? Because:
* August 31, 2013 is a Saturday which means your local post office may be closed.
* There are a few changes to the grant application which means it may take a little longer to fill out than usual.
* I will be at a family reunion and unable to answer your questions August 15-20th. Ferol Weyand will be available to answer logistical questions and my supervisor, Susan Weston, will be available to answer questions about how to fill out the application and what is/isn't an allowable cost. I will include their contact information in my out-of-office messages on my phone and in my email while I am gone.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need help with the changes on the application.
As my colleague Ann Reed says, "Call early, call often!"
Thanks,
Katie

Subject: [R2R-OR] 2013-2014 Ready to Read application in the mail this week, now available online
Importance: High
Dear Ready to Read key contacts and library directors,
The 2013-2014 Ready to Read Grant applications are going out in the mail this week so please be on the lookout for them. Library directors will receive the official copy that needs to be signed and mailed to the State Library by August 31, 2013. Key contacts will receive a working copy of the application for planning purposes.
Electronic copies of the 2013-2014 R2R application and FAQ are now online at: http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/aboutready.aspx
What's new for R2R this year?
* This year libraries will have a list of predetermined outcomes to choose from in an effort to improve outcome based evaluation of R2R and align R2R with state education goals. Please see the FAQ in your July mailing or online for more information. Contact me if you have questions.
* The deadline for submitting final reports has changed to December 31st of every year to better align with the deadline for having all grant funds spent which is also December 31st. Please update your calendars.
Please remember:
* Applications postmarked after August 31, 2013 will not be approved so take a moment to mark your calendars accordingly so you can meet this deadline. Oregon Revised Statutes do not allow exceptions if you miss this deadline for any reason.
* Original signatures are required so applications that are faxed or submitted via email will not be accepted.
* Past projects descriptions are available for you to get ideas, go to: http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/aboutready.aspx#Project_Descriptions.
* Grant award notifications will be mailed in October. Libraries have 15 days after the postmark on the October mailing to appeal their grant award if necessary.
* Checks will be mailed no later than December 31, 2013.
* The final report forms for your current 2012-2013 R2R grants will be included in the October mailing and posted online in October as usual.
Other important R2R information:
* The expansion of R2R to 15-17 year olds did not pass. However, the Legislature and Governor agreed to provide most of the additional funding the State Library requested for the expansion. Therefore next year R2R will be funded at $0.95 per child 0-14 years old! Please thank your local Legislators.
* The Legislature was not opposed to expanding library grants to 15-17 year olds; they just didn't think it aligned with the early learning goals. They suggest the State Library reexamine the R2R grant program, update it to align with the broader P-20 state education goals, and bring a new proposal to them next time.
* The State Library will put together a R2R task force including public library directors, children's and teen librarians, OEIB/ODE staff, and other key stakeholders to participate in the process of reexamination and alignment to statewide education goals. More information about this will be coming soon.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Katie
