Hello folks,
I wanted to share some thoughts about data collected by the State Library. I think there may be some confusion about summer reading statistics and Ready to Read report. In the last few years, it's been a challenge to get summer statistics turned in. I haven't been sure how to approach this. We are often asked for statewide data around summer, this is a pretty crucial component of data we can share to demonstrate library impact on Oregon youth and families. For summer statistics this year, when I wasn't getting many returned, I decided to directly assign each library the summer reading stats task in the online grant system, hoping I would get more turned in. (It worked! 118 of you turned them in!) Usually I try to close summer stats by the end of September, but this year went longer because I think it's better to have as much data as possible to give a clearer picture.
The summer stats don't collect any data about Ready to Read. Ready to Read funds can be used to support both early literacy and summer reading. Some libraries use Ready to Read funds ONLY for early literacy. Because of this, the Ready to Read report is not the optimal place to collect summer data that would represent all libraries in Oregon.
All this to say, I'm sorry for any confusion around the summer stats form and the Ready to Read report<https://slo.oregon.gov/readytoreadgrant>. The 2025 Ready to Read report, where you tell us how your library used 2025 Ready to Read funds, is due Tuesday, December 2nd. All the data you share gets rolled up into the Annual Report available here<https://slo.oregon.gov/readytoreadgrant>. If you have any questions, please reach out as soon as possible. I'm going to be out Friday and next week, but will be back Monday, December 1st and happy to work with you to ensure you get the time you need to complete the report. Once we have 2025 reports, we are able to mail 2026 Ready to Read checks.
Please let me know if this raises any question, comments, or ideas. I sincerely appreciate the time it takes to share your data, and don't take it lightly.
Best,
Greta
