From katie.anderson at state.or.us Tue Sep 1 09:20:06 2009 From: katie.anderson at state.or.us (Katie Anderson) Date: Tue, 1 Sep 2009 09:20:06 -0700 Subject: [Reading-For-Healthy-Families] RFHF: Year 1 Evaluation online! Message-ID: <43684BD6-D704-4E29-BE97-AD7418A22433@state.or.us> The Year 1 evaluation of RFHF by NPC Research in now online: http://tiny.cc/Cvxvz Congratulations on the wonderful work you are doing, we are already starting to see results! NPC Research found that families receiving RFHF early literacy education from Healthy Start family support workers reported a significant increase in telling stories or talking with their children about daily activities compared to families who did not receive RFHF early literacy education. As you know, telling stories and talking about daily activities develops vocabulary and narrative skills, two of the six early literacy skills children need to learn to read. This may not seem like big results, but note that NPC Research used data collected in May to write this report. In May few of you had fulfilled your commitment of providing early literacy education to 15 families. In May, many of the Healthy Start families who received early literacy education from you had not been assessed for progress because assessments only take place when children are a certain age. Imagine, if the little data we have already shows your work is having a positive impact on children and families, what will that impact on your community after you've trained your 15 families? And, when those children start kindergarten! Thank you all for your commitment to children and families, early literacy education, and Reading for Healthy Families. A blank log is attached, or you can download and save the "Recording Log" to your computer from: http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/rfhf.recording.log.shtml#Recording_Log. Please email your completed log to me at katie.anderson at state.or.us. You can also print your completed log and fax it to 503-378-6439 or mail it to me at 250 Winter St. NE, Salem OR 97301. NOTE: The "Six Skills Overview" workshop is not on the drop-down menu under "Main Education Session Emphasized". If you presented this session, please select "Print Motiviation" instead. Remember, you may not count childcare providers, preschool teachers, or other early childhood professionals because NPC Research and our funders are evaluating parent education specifically. However, we hope you won't exclude them from your early literacy education sessions. If you present sessions to early childhood professionals, please include these numbers in the body of your email when you send your completed recording log--it will be excellent addition data to support the program and demonstrate libraries committment to early literacy. Thanks to all of you who have already submitted your recording logs! I just received information about another source for inexpensive children's books: All About Books at http://www.allaboutbooks.org/. Here is what my colleague had to say: "Great popular board books average cost is $2.00-3.00. Most books are discounted at least 50% from the regular retail price. For every 12 books purchased you get 12 free books. There is also free shipping. Their website is www.allaboutbooks.org. We have purchased several hundred books from them and they are great to work with."
