This is not an endorsement. As always use your selection/collection development policy to determine if books are right for your school, library, or program.?Katie From: alsc-l-request at lists.ala.org [mailto:alsc-l-request at lists.ala.org] On Behalf Of Roxanne Feldman Sent: Wednesday, March 01, 2017 6:22 AM To: alsc-l at lists ala. org ; CHILD_LIT ; pubyac at lists.lis.illinois.edu Subject: [alsc-l] Introducing Candied Plums - Bilingual Chinese/English imprint Friends, For the past year and a half, I have been working closely as a consultant with a brand new Chinese Children's books imprint, Candied Plums, to publish the first batch of contemporary Chinese picture books (some in complete English version and others are Chinese/English bilingual.) It's always been a dream of mine to bridge the U.S. and the China children's lit fields. Lucky to have had the opportunity to offer my service this way. The books are finally available to readers in the U.S. I just posted on my blog about the imprint. If interested, please take a look. (read the email at the bottom for context) Here are a few highlights from Oregon's Early Learning and Kindergarten Guidelines: * The guidelines are available in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, and English! * The guidelines cover five domains of learning and development and I've linked to resources for each domain here: o Approaches to learning: The skills and behaviors that children use when they are learning. o Language and communication: The ability to express and understand thoughts and feelings. o Literacy: The knowledge and skills that prepare children for reading and writing. o Mathematics: Counting, patterning, recognizing shapes, measuring, and sorting. o Social-emotional development: The ability to form relationships and manage emotions. * The introduction in the guidelines document includes good overviews/reviews of the following things: o Adverse childhood experiences and trauma-informed practice o Culturally responsive practice o Developmentally appropriate practice o Dual language learners o Family engagement o Oregon's Equity Lens * The in-depth section for each domain includes a lot of extremely useful information! o Developmental progression chart so you know what to expect for typically developing children at ages 3, 4/5 (not in kindergarten), and 5/6 (in kindergarten) o Goals o Information about supporting children with special needs, dual language learners, and culturally responsive practices specific to each domain Here are a few things specifically related to public libraries: * You'll notice that reading is an activity adults can do to help develop all five domains! (It's not explicitly listed under social-emotional, but we all know excellent picture books about relationships and emotions that we can read in storytimes and know that a growing body of research shows reading fiction helps to develop empathy!) * Below I've linked to great one-page handouts for each domain that have a brief description of the domain and things adults can do to help children develop that domain. These would be good for printing and making available to parents and early childhood professionals. These appear to be available in English only. o Approaches to learning o Language and communication o Literacy o Mathematics o Social-emotional development * Skim each of these one-page handouts and when you get to the bottom section of each page that describes the activities adults can do to help children develop that domain... o Put a star by the activities you already do and think you're doing a good job implementing in storytimes or other programs/services for young children. o Identify one activity you already do, but want to work on improving how you implement it in storytimes or other programs/services for young children. o Identify one activity you aren't doing that you want to try to implement in storytimes or other programs/services for young children. * If you are using outcome-based evaluation, most of the goals explicitly stated in the guidelines document can easily be translated into outcomes. If you have questions about the guidelines, contact Brett Walker at the Early Learning Division (503-378-5160, brett.walker at state.or.us) If you have questions about the library-specific and Every Child Ready to Read-specific applications of the guidelines, contact me (503-378-2528, katie.anderson at state.or.us). I just received the following announcement and thought most of you would want to know right away. I haven't had a chance to read them yet, but I will and in a couple of weeks I'll send a follow-up email with highlights like I often do with these types of things.-Katie Oregon's Early Learning and Kindergarten Guidelines Release We are pleased to announce the release of Oregon's Early Learning and Kindergarten Guidelines, which align the learning and developmental progressions for children ages 3-6 in the domains of approaches to learning, social-emotional development, language and communication, literacy, and mathematics. The Guidelines are designed to equip early learning providers and kindergarten teachers with a set of shared expectations for children's learning and development in these domains, and our hope is that they help to foster shared approaches to developmentally appropriate and culturally-responsive classroom practices across the PreK-K spectrum. The Guidelines, as well as a set of supporting resources, can be accessed on the Early Learnig and Kindergarten Guildelines web page. The launch of the Guidelines web page is the first of a multi-step process for helping early learning providers access and make use of the Guidelines. We will have hard copies as well as versions translated into Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese and Chinese available in the very near future. Additionally, ODE and ELD staff will conducting trainings on how to effectively use the Guidelines throughout the state, and will be working to create professional development resources to help support implementation. Please check the Guidelines web page for regular updates. If you have questions or would like more information about the Guidelines, please contact Brett Walker with the Early Learning Division at 503.378.5160 or by email at brett.walker at state.or.us.
