Subject: [Sora] Everything you need to know about December 4th

Hey guys!

We're planning a HUGE event at the Portland State Office Building (800 NE Oregon St., Portland) on December 4th. It's the first time we've been in Portland, AND it's a full day event that the State of Oregon Research Academy is co-hosting with the State Library of Oregon.

* State Library of Oregon offering THREE training classes, and librarians will be onsite and available for consultation (***Pre-registration required through iLearn***)

* State of Oregon Research Academy hosting TWO presentations (no sign-up required)

* Guided Tours of the International Outbreak Museum (***Pre-registration required through link below***)

That's a lot going on, so here's everything you need to know:

In the morning: State Library of Oregon Classes
The State Library of Oregon is leading three amazing training classes on how to use the library's research services. State Librarians will also be available after the event for consultation.

You will need to sign-up for these classes on iLearn to attend. Space is limited, so don't wait. Use the links below and look for the sessions on December 4th at "DHSOHA - Room 1D - Portland State Office Bldg".

https://ilearn.oregon.gov/ContentDetails.aspx?id=ABE27B7200B1403AACE84CCEF1EC5175

We will introduce state employees to the many resources and services the State Library offers primarily through its website. This class will serve as a bridge for more advance library classes and will familiarize the participant how the State Library can assist them with their work.

10:00am

Introduction to Scopus

https://ilearn.oregon.gov/ContentDetails.aspx?id=C10C03C248384F9F987F7B205D302778

Learn how to use Scopus, an interdisciplinary, bibliographic database from Elsevier that indexes the contents of more than 21,000 publications. Scopus also features cited references and can be searched for articles that cite a specific article. This presentation will focus on using Scopus for research in the many disciplines state employees work within. We will discuss how to order articles and leverage Scopus against other State Library database resources.

11:00am

Finding Data & Statistics

This training will highlight State Library supplied databases that provide access to datasets and statistics, along with recommended government statistics portals. We'll look at ways of searching and browsing for information, along with the functionality of the databases to use and display datasets.

Have questions or need additional information about these classes? Contact the State Library at 503-378-8800 or library.help at state.or.us<mailto:library.help at state.or.us>.

In the afternoon: Two amazing SORA presentations
The State of Oregon Research Academy is hosting two spectacular presentations that you won't want to miss. Registration is not required for SORA's portion of the program, so just show up! Unfortunately, we will not be able to live-stream the event.

1:30pm - 3:30pm

* Dr. Larry Martinez, Portland State University - New Research in Diversity, Inclusion, and Allyship at Work

Diversity and inclusion remain critical aspects of organizational effectiveness and competitive advantage. However, there is often a lack of communication between research scholars who uncover data-driven best practices and organizational decision-makers who can enact actual change. In this talk, Dr. Martinez will provide an overview of some of the most contemporary diversity and inclusion research including his own work on allyship in organizational contexts.

* Peter Stevens, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife - How Many Roads Must a Sturgeon Walk Down? Movement of White Sturgeon in the Federal Columbia River Power System

Peter Stevens will discuss how a long-term dataset of tagged White Sturgeon was used to examine sturgeon movements up and downstream within the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS). This study used multi-state mark-recapture modeling with group co-variates to determine: 1) rates of inter-pool movement, 2) directionality of movement and 3) the physical mechanisms driving directional movement between pools.

In the in-between: Tour the International Outbreak Museum
The Portland State Office Building is also the home of the International Outbreak Museum<http://www.outbreakmuseum.com/>. The IOM is the culmination one man's<http://www.outbreakmuseum.com/dr-bill-keene/> career-long quest to document over three decades of infectious disease outbreak investigations. They will be hosting free guided tours at 1pm and 3:30pm. Spaces are extremely limited, so sign-up here for tickets:
