Hi SORA members, researchers, analysts -

This email has two GIS related shares for you.

GIS for ESJ
The American Geographical Society EthhicalGEO<https://ethicalgeo.org/> program recently published a comprehensive GIS for ESJ Best Practices<https://staging4.ethicalgeo.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/GIS-for-ESJ-Best-Practices-AGS-EthicalGEO20200721.pdf> report (32 pages). It outlines how GIS can be effectively integrated into public agency policies, projects, and programs centered/rooted in equity and social justice initiatives. Topics covered include spatial data management, data sources, geospatial analysis, data visualization, and an introduction to community participation plans. Some additional info on the project is available here<https://ethicalgeo.org/greg-babinski/> under the "EthicalGEO Project Results" header.

I think many researchers/analysts connected with data and surveying processes will find value in reading the report and generalizing it to non-GIS contexts, too. Please feel free to share and use the report widely, with many thanks to Greg Babinski who led this project (also see his original email below) and the King County GIS team!
tidycensus workshops (free & online)
Through the University of Michigan's Social Science Data Analysis Network, Kyle Walker<https://walker-data.com/> (the creator & maintainer of the tidycensus<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.us15.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D1829a68a5eda3d301119fdcd6%26id%3D08c236551b%26e%3D70df1fad8f&data=04%7C01%7Camelia.vargas%40ode.state.or.us%7Cdc14bb0f273443f216e108d8d9708842%7Cb4f51418b26949a2935afa54bf584fc8%7C0%7C0%7C637498424653969900%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=6bUYytJPnV9oZ7kS5OwAWve7Oul9ldKcf4eip%2BNCuFc%3D&reserved=0> package), is offering a series of tidycensus workshops in March.
The workshops are free, online, and all skill levels are welcome. The dates and topics are as follows:

· March 4, 11am-2pm Pacific Time: Accessing and Analyzing US Census Data in R

· March 11, 11am-2pm Pacific Time: Spatial Analysis of US Census Data in R

· March 25, 11am-2pm Pacific Time: Analyzing US Census Microdata in R

Greetings....

Most of you at some point have attended the King County GIS and URISA-Certified Introduction to GIS for Equity and Social Justice workshop (https://kingcounty.gov/services/gis/training/Catalog/gis-for-equity-and-social-justice.aspx<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkingcounty.gov%2Fservices%2Fgis%2Ftraining%2FCatalog%2Fgis-for-equity-and-social-justice.aspx&data=04%7C01%7Camelia.vargas%40ode.state.or.us%7C8618a7f3d4694cebbf1f08d8c406c091%7Cb4f51418b26949a2935afa54bf584fc8%7C0%7C0%7C637474880591110711%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=I%2BP52HuESNjpYQajG2hPXsdNwG6ogX3x%2Fl9Xvx8VtlY%3D&reserved=0>). The workshop has now been presented 15 times to about 360 people.

About 40% of the workshop content refers to GIS for ESJ Best Practices. I wanted to ensure that everyone knows that a more comprehensive GIS for ESJ Best Practices document has now been completed and published by the American Geographical Society EthicalGEO program (https://ethicalgeo.org/<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fethicalgeo.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7Camelia.vargas%40ode.state.or.us%7C8618a7f3d4694cebbf1f08d8c406c091%7Cb4f51418b26949a2935afa54bf584fc8%7C0%7C0%7C637474880591120707%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=2kNXW7Qi9tTs0eqMGr0T45vDP30bNEHFK7H95RTUEl4%3D&reserved=0>). The GIS for ESJ Best Practices document itself can be accessed here: https://ethicalgeo.org/greg-babinski/<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fethicalgeo.org%2Fgreg-babinski%2F&data=04%7C01%7Camelia.vargas%40ode.state.or.us%7C8618a7f3d4694cebbf1f08d8c406c091%7Cb4f51418b26949a2935afa54bf584fc8%7C0%7C0%7C637474880591130695%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=7QHdv6J%2BCqJMDII9Cn19HX7b2%2FIM%2BKYHcRAFn%2FmAd4Q%3D&reserved=0>. This document was developed with the advice and input of about 55 GIS and ESJ practitioners, to whom I am very grateful.

Also of interest to many of you will be President Biden's January 20, 2021 Executive Order On Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fbriefing-room%2Fpresidential-actions%2F2021%2F01%2F20%2Fexecutive-order-advancing-racial-equity-and-support-for-underserved-communities-through-the-federal-government%2F&data=04%7C01%7Camelia.vargas%40ode.state.or.us%7C8618a7f3d4694cebbf1f08d8c406c091%7Cb4f51418b26949a2935afa54bf584fc8%7C0%7C0%7C637474880591140691%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=TE1sYaEe2faPJRqNgSFf8mM1nZYfzLxN2odXtNyzUCY%3D&reserved=0>. This order references the important role of geography and geographic analysis for understanding ESJ issues and advancing racial equity.

Best wishes....
