Help! How do I get to my desktop?
It's covered with open documents and programs.
I'm working on a project and I have several files and programs open on my computer. I've been toggling between throughout the day.
... Gmail
... my Google Calendar
... a few Word documents
... a PowerPoint
... as well as a few Internet browser windows
I need to open a file that was saved to my desktop. I could minimize each document and program one-by-one, or I could accomplish this with a shortcut...
Minimize All Open Docs/Programs at ONE Time
There are three different ways to close everything you have open, to get to your desktop: a keyboard command, a taskbar selection and a vertical line (in Windows 10).
1. If You Like Keyboard Commands:
· Click the WINDOWS key + M (think "M" for Minimize).

· To restore all the apps to their original state on your desktop, use the keyboard shortcut WINDOWS key + Shift + M.
2. Use the Taskbar
· Right-click in an empty place in your taskbar, select Show the desktop.

· To re-display all open programs, right-click in the taskbar again and select Show Open Windows.
3. If You Have Windows 10...
· ...just click the very small vertical bar to the very right of the toolbar. They call this the Show Desktop button. (It's kind of hiding down there and you may not have even noticed it before.)
· To restore all applications, click it again.

How to Use the Like and Do Well Quad
You can draw these boxes and fill them in or simply write the headings down in a list. Then fill in ideas under each heading. Here are some examples of Linda's quad as it regards the Tech-Talk product...
Like and Do Well
· Create and develop a vision for Tech-Talk
· Build relationships with subscribers
Like but Don't Do Well Yet
· Produce videos
Don't Like but Do Well
· Making cold calls
Don't Like and Don't Do Well
· Fix technical issues on the website
NOTE: This is a sampling in each category. You will want to list all of your responsibilities ... in one box or the other. That way you get a true picture of what is expected of you.
So, what do you do with this information? After you've articulated these items, the first thing that happens is that you become aware. Then conversations can be had between manager and team members, colleagues, even yourself.
Maybe the discussion is about getting training so that you can shift items you "like and don't do well yet", to the "like and do well" column. Or maybe you have a conversation on how you can work to divest items in the "don't like" areas.
Knowledge is power. You want to capitalize on knowing how your responsibilities fall out in these categories.
· Like and Do Well ... Keep doing and perhaps find more for this area.
· Like but Don't Do Well Yet ... Look for training and openings on these topics.
· Don't Like but Do Well ... Maybe shift to others or learn to like it.
· Don't Like and Don't Do Well ... Try to move away from these responsibilities.
