INTERNET - Cutting the Cord... Moving From Cable to Streaming
Intermediate

[cord cutting]

Are you thinking about "cutting the cord" -- ditching your expensive cable subscription… and replacing it with streaming options? Or simply using an HD antenna?

Not only are many Millennials opting out of cable … replacing traditional television services for streaming options, but with so many free (and low cost) options to view movies and TV shows available, this seems to be on the rise across all generations.

What does "streaming" mean? This term refers to the continuous transmission of video (or audio) files from an Internet source ... not downloading a TV show or movie and saving it on your computer. For example, you're streaming when you're watching a video on YouTube. The video resides on a server somewhere and you're just watching it.

How do you access the shows and movies you want to view if you no longer have cable? This is where on-demand streaming services like Amazon Prime Video or Netflix offer a variety of movies, TV shows and original series. Or you could choose to subscribe to a TV streaming service like Sling TV or Hulu... where you watch live television channels that you're familiar with from cable.

So, what does "cutting the cord" entail? What options do you have, and what equipment or apps do you need? Before you make the call to your cable company, be sure to research your options to make sure that you can still view the programs you love. Let's take a look.

OPTION 1: Using an Antenna

[antenna]

It seems a bit ironic that we got rid of ugly rooftop antennas years ago, but now they are coming back!

With an antenna, over 80% of US-based households are able to receive some of their local over-the-air network TV signals at NO cost from major networks in your area -- such as ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS, and more. There is no subscription or monthly fees, just a one-time cost for the antenna.

Now, the range of channels received will depend on the height, power, and frequency coming from the local transmitting tower -- as well as the type of antenna, the terrain, and the number of obstacles between your antenna and the transmitting tower.

You can find Indoor and Indoor/Outdoor antennas at stores like Best Buy, Walmart or Amazon, but you should do a little homework first to see what is best for your location. The folks at https://www.antennasdirect.com<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001mPMS6swHrsXla3_tgik2UlvucB8CAtc74Fdnzak_2VZ62-9kJDphVg-fZGDDStPyLzS0vbgGMmHaN4lOD2xatFZMzRiTAbV7KnxyIQm2DePyi9LANpvshp2VhWDWH2aWvXjoVfh9VLeWWlPMM4zlmR2W6BqnzuWU&c=c4GFOxZXF8UEPoSqwt0XhOqZur2XneA-OqyeHpm0dwK5QVesTh79gw==&ch=_WvFxHEOnb9bXX0GU66X2YAFbA0zyuT7gpj7F1rUDHIxB_xbzKVqnQ==> offer free phone support and educational materials to help you select the best antenna type for you.

OPTION 2: Streaming Services

IMPORTANT: Be prepared to be flexible. You'll likely be dealing with new technologies, new apps and piecing a variety of services together to be able to view the programs and movies that you want.

[speed test]

STEP #1: Internet Service

For streaming services to work, you will need a decent Internet service including a Wi-Fi router so that your TV and other devices (tablet, computer, phone) can get online from any part of the house/building.

If you don't have enough speed you won't be able to view your programs smoothly without interruptions (called buffering - freezing and starting again).

It is recommended that you have a constant internet download speed of 25 Mbps for the streaming portion of your internet needs. Check with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to see if your package offers the required speed, or if you need to upgrade.

TIP: Learn more about doing a speed test in this article, https://www.tech-talk.com/improve-your-connectivity-check-speed-tests.html<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001mPMS6swHrsXla3_tgik2UlvucB8CAtc74Fdnzak_2VZ62-9kJDphVqPPYPwuD7oGqDGv0PdLWHHGWHqBzrLfxch87SeLeM_rk-MHIPec5p3FAllwMAW-xEU4ou_LgnVjfVIvknU2LkgmfhcQQRMBq6KV4aaZ5zYLV9UFEy_Srt0HhmXkGETXKvdh5LPKKujhAoKtcSu3X1bHintdHwGI_w==&c=c4GFOxZXF8UEPoSqwt0XhOqZur2XneA-OqyeHpm0dwK5QVesTh79gw==&ch=_WvFxHEOnb9bXX0GU66X2YAFbA0zyuT7gpj7F1rUDHIxB_xbzKVqnQ==>

Step #2: Your Device for Viewing

There are several options for setting up Internet-based streaming. If you're going to watch on a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer, it's easy to download the streaming services you want (more on this later). No additional hardware is needed.

However, if you are viewing on a TV, there are a few ways to connect to the apps that provide the shows and movies you want to view.

[smart tv]

Smart TV
Most televisions purchased in the last 10 years are "smart." This means they have the capability to connect to the Internet and have some streaming apps built-in and are pre-set up to connect to the app/streaming service. All you need to do is enter your account credentials. Consult your television's user guide to see what apps are already connected.

[streaming device]

Streaming Devices
Even if your TV is smart, there may be limitations to connecting to some streaming apps as you can't always add new ones to your TV. A streaming device will provide that connectivity. You can opt for a thumb-drive-sized unit that plugs into the HDMI port on the TV or a larger hub that's more of a box that plugs in. Popular options include Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Google Chromecast or Apple TV.

When you use a device, it creates a portal to streaming services. For example, as illustrated in the image below, on the Roku home screen you'll see apps in a tile format to popular streaming services -- ready for you to connect to and set up your subscription (if they are paid services).

[Roku screen]

[dvd player]

Media Hub
If you already have a gaming device like Xbox or PlayStation (depending on the version) you can use these media devices for streaming. Additionally, many Blu-ray players provide streaming options in addition to playing DVDs on your television.

Step #3: Choose One (or more) Apps/Subscriptions That You Want To Use

Now that you've got your Internet service and device for viewing, it's time to pick what service(s) you want to use to access the programs and movies you prefer. These fall primarily into three buckets:

1. Free
2. TV streaming services
3. On-demand streaming services

Read about a variety of streaming options in the full article in the Tech-Talk database...

The Tech-Talk e-newsletter for Oregon library staff is distributed weekly via the Libs-OR and TechTalk mailing lists. Know someone who might be interested in receiving a copy but they’re not on TechTalk or Libs-OR mailing lists? Have them contact darci.hanning at state.or.us<mailto:darci.hanning at state.or.us> or visit http://listsmart.osl.state.or.us/mailman/listinfo/techtalk to subscribe to just the Tech-Talk newsletter!

Tech-Talk is a paid subscription service for staff of Oregon libraries and is supported in whole by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), administered by the State Library of Oregon.
