MOBILE - Control What Apps are Tracking You
Intermediate
[mobile tracking]
Here's a topic suggested by one of our subscribers.
On your mobile phone (or other smart device like a tablet or Kindle) you may love using Google Maps to direct you to a location quickly. Or, perhaps you like Uber or Lyft to give you a ride. The app needs to know where you are!
Another time you would want an app to pinpoint your location is when you'd like to see if it's going to be sunny or rainy ... using the weather app.
Well, these apps have to track your location, right? They need to do that to support you effectively.
But did you know that many other apps track your location as well… programs that don't really need it? For instance, you don't have to have Shutterfly, Instagram or Spotify know where you are.
Is There a Better Way?
When you first download a new app to your device, it is required to ASK you if it can track your location. Here's the deal: you don't have to say yes. If the app doesn't need location information to work, there's no reason to allow it tracking access.
So why say "No"? There are two main reasons. One, when you keep the number of apps that track you to a minimum, it helps protect your data. Two, it tends to decrease highly targeted ads showing up (although it does not eliminate them all-together).
The good news is that, no matter what initial choice you make when you download a new app, you can easily change it on your iPhone or Android device at any time.
You can turn ALL tracking off or adjust on an individual app basis.
NOTE: This ability applies to iOS version 14.5 and newer. The option varies on Android devices.
Adjust Location Tracking Settings
[location settings]
For an Apple Device (iPhone or iPad):
· Open the Settings app
· Tap Privacy
· Select Location Services
If you want to completely stop ALL apps from using your location, turn Location Services OFF.
Then, depending on the app, there will be three or four location sharing options:
· Never - turns it completely off.
· Ask Next Time - the app will prompt you how want to proceed each time you open it.
· While Using the App - location tracking is only engaged while it is actively in use on your screen.
· Always - lets the app always track your location even when it is not open or actively being used.
[precise location tracking]
Another Option: Precise Location
You may be fine with certain apps using your general location data, but don't want them to see specifically where you are.
In this case, you can use the Location Access settings area to toggle OFF the Precise Location setting.
This will show an approximate location, instead of exactly where you are.
Adjust Tracking on an Android Device
NOTE: There are many different types of Android devices. Look for settings like these to make changes.
· Go to Settings, Location, App permissions.
OR
· Settings, Apps, Menu (three dots at top right), App permissions, Location.
OR
· Settings, Apps & notifications, Permissions, Your location.
In the list of apps that have access to your location, you can toggle On or Off.

Communication: With Self
Physically send yourself a message (a hug)
You know we communicate with ourselves, right? Our thoughts are running all the time. Occasionally we even talk out loud to ourselves.
So let's take it one step further and consider a reassuring message to oneself ... using the gift of touch.
That's right, give yourself a hug. Wrap your arms around your shoulders (or however you prefer to be comforted) and squeeze. You're telling yourself that you matter, you're good, you deserve comfort.
Touch is a powerful method of communication. "Talk" to yourself with a hug occasionally and see how you feel. Good, I bet!

Leadership
Yup, Gallup did it yet again!
The 9th time Gallup did a massive poll (and analysis) on employee engagement (2021), they essentially found the same results: only 20% of the workforce is actively engaged in their jobs.
This is massively important! With only two out of 10 people really pulling their weight, there is a LOT of wasted time and effort.
It's the actively engaged employee who gets work done, who looks for opportunities for the organization to succeed, who is reliable, conscientious, innovative.
It's the actively engaged employee that most employers, managers, team leaders want, right? Individuals who take responsibility, know their job and move forward ... who are actively engaged.
If you've been reading this leadership series from the beginning (January 2020) you know that it's the Egalitarian leader who has the secret to creating an actively engaged environment.
Your organization, your department, your team doesn't have to be at the norm - with only two out of 10 people really focused and willing to help the group succeed.
Egalitarian leaders (of a group or as individual contributors) use mutual respect along with polished communication skills and proven processes to nourish an actively engaged environment.
Need a refresher on what these are? Go to the Tech-Talk database, click on Search by Topic, choose Leadership ... also Search by Keyword for "Egalitarian."
