OFFICE - Did You Know There’s a No-Cost Version of Microsoft Office?
Intermediate
[Office online]
If you work on a computer, you're probably familiar with using the suite of Microsoft Office software programs like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc…
However, did you know that a few years ago, Microsoft introduced a F*R*E*E version of its software in an online format? Anyone can create an account and use it at no cost at all.
It is cloud-based, similar to the Google family of apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more). This means that you don't download anything to your computer or tablet. Once you create an account, you log in and use it all online. The files you create are stored in OneDrive, or you can download them to your computer.
Now, the online version isn't as fully functional as it's desktop software counterpart. You won't get all of Word's formatting options or some of the powerful and detailed Excel graphs. But the simplicity of the online version is a good fit for basic business and personal use.
TIP: If you already have a Microsoft 365 (paid) account, you can get to the fully-featured web-based version by going to Office.com/signin<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0015rRRXIJ-u67XvSjuWUWRtj-5gyRwPiVVNjPzG3I9q385q6CWO7tFsvlAbIwyjAwbwZVSrVBpVXmICoTwxNVr8HldKuNTrmsxyAaERZCAlyNC3pivjBfy3BGOWqSje_xv_Xjd4oTCXb3OvkmM6B_5Nw==&c=_qJs_2YG95i6nCsKJ8hjhIJ5Qe59xWnoDcHjgadjxL3wqYT-80tE8A==&ch=DXtQqajP8KbA1kVfdS0SsDnQvBiFoMeENu48zobdqBl_AITycZ3vEw==>.

Why Would You Want the Free Version?
For example, a student, small business owner or retired individual may not need all of the bells and whistles of the desktop software, and instead, just needs the basic features the free version offers.
Additionally, Office.com is "mobile" in that you can use it from any computer, tablet or phone app and save your files in the cloud as well. You get 5GB of free storage which is plenty for personal use.
And you can easily share files with others in the no-cost platform as well.
Office Web Apps
In addition to the familiar Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, with the free online version you have access to the basic versions of these apps:
· OneDrive for file storage.
· OneNote to keep all your notes in one place.
· Sway for interactive reports.
· Forms that let you create online surveys and quizzes.
· People acts as your contact management/address book.
· Calendar for scheduling and keeping track of appointments.
· Skype for online calling and messaging.

Communications: Talking
Disagree With the Idea, Not the Person
I recently had what could have turned into a contentious conversation, had I not remembered, and used, today's communication tip.
A fellow at work was voicing thoughts about my computer and its behavior that I simply felt were wrong. I could not agree with him; nor did I want to ignore his statements as if to indicate acceptance.
The question became (in my head), how can I take a stand on this topic, one which is contrary to his vehement statements, without causing a fuss and getting his back up? If that were to happen, he'd be less agreeable to helping me solve my problem.
So, instead of saying, "That's not true." Or "That doesn't make any sense."
I simply said, firmly, "I disagree with that statement."
The Point: Disagree with the idea, the thought ... NOT the person. Speak it out loud, actually stating that you "disagree with that idea." TIP: Keep your statement in the third-person, not second. For example:
"I disagree with that idea." (Best)
"I disagree with your idea." (Not Good)
(When you use the word "your," you are personalizing it ...
and that is not your intent.)
Back to the story: When I disagreed with his idea, he didn't lose face, or feel attacked. Instead, he understood that we were on different sides of the fence. Feelings didn't enter into the conversation and we could continue to discuss the facts from both sides.

Leadership
Meeting Role: Timekeeper
Typically, when you attend a meeting there is a specific stop time. That means you only have a set number of minutes to get everything done.
In these situations, it's helpful to have a designated timekeeper.
Some of the responsibilities that this individual can do include leading a discussion of how the group plans to use its allotted time. In other words, how many minutes are planned for each agenda item?
Once the time is planned out and agreed to, the timekeeper's role is to alert the group when they are nearing the end of the allotment. The group may want to know when they only have 5 or 10 minutes left.
Inevitably, there will be times when the group isn't finished on schedule and wish to continue on the same topic.
Again, here is where the timekeeper steps in and finds out from the group if they are in agreement to continue (using some other topic's time) and if so, how many more minutes do they want to add to their time.
As you can see from the above, a timekeeper has a very significant role and can help teams feel much more productive than just moseying along without paying attention to the clock.
