INTERNET - Are You Using the Google Password Manager?

Intermediate

[Lastpass webinar]

We know that the average person has over 100 different types of accounts that they use a password to access...from your bank and social media to sites like Tech-Talk.com.

To keep track of these you may have them written in a notebook, use a spreadsheet or maybe a password manager like LastPass<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001IT6o-tTx0yi4zWwwR4OgYVvVNSRWWL7gnZIOk7M6lQ7n9DuTPmrjMkwLRelUgaF5QlKAcbVSXL3W8VrpPRx8dALwQ7tjL2yzPRnrTZ0XTuRG5bw7VULMCfeijLqWuRoXfU2-8qedu-P67kHq8ZK3nn4PVJJllYC_fv0mFOUDX2B2yVAmA2fZNZmsNw_mCdRlMgjy_ffSl3pDILK-dSeBQX1lxTJCA925LeRizMOBxXL81zslr8MZtA%3D%3D%26c%3DeFg5Xzb1UvmHH_VfThQ8vhKsUEBs65lg7uEXXRZwHhktY0ND3TQ44w%3D%3D%26ch%3D07g1dkhfkyRTn6hbCcQmBaXzJ51IPv1-87zxJY02ISz0IKxr-YPUxA%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C3be0bd16933b4e5b013008da905369f1%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C637980985217270787%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ujBynKuBypIYGBnkL0tVvQz75linYhnzgo7firvYihk%3D&reserved=0> or RoboForm<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001IT6o-tTx0yi4zWwwR4OgYVvVNSRWWL7gnZIOk7M6lQ7n9DuTPmrjMnQwpxwnK-oEI-MXlrAyPzNUxbOKvnw9AgZ50U-sCgYd7Ht2Z_AhJaoV6OCtU2vf_LhKpRmP_z5BncoW4DEsSO9Z8KGsIy0QF1p5G-GdnXWMfu3HmaN3d4il5_n3Q_v9LzzMrBB2Obf6_WehFPIWwjzFfaY4bDYIlz6Z2gJOnfGv%26c%3DeFg5Xzb1UvmHH_VfThQ8vhKsUEBs65lg7uEXXRZwHhktY0ND3TQ44w%3D%3D%26ch%3D07g1dkhfkyRTn6hbCcQmBaXzJ51IPv1-87zxJY02ISz0IKxr-YPUxA%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C3be0bd16933b4e5b013008da905369f1%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C637980985217270787%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=loN51piAo6i0zXq%2B%2FYs4VjwLrFiholYc9V%2FF4jidGbQ%3D&reserved=0>.

However, if you already use Google for your email and Google products like Docs, Sheets, Calendars, etc… have you thought of using the Chrome Password manager? If you trust Google to protect your email and important documents, could you use it to manage your passwords too?

Before we jump into this free tool, it's essential to look at what makes a safe password and what the experts say about using password managers to keep your vital info secure.

What Makes a Strong Password?

When creating passwords, follow these guidelines to make sure that they are secure and random.

Passwords SHOULD:
· Contain 16 characters or more.
· Include a combination of letters, numbers, and characters.
· Be unique for each item and not used for other accounts. Yes, that means you need a different password for every site/app you log into.

And… they Should NOT:
· Include any of the user's information (address, phone number, birthday, kids'/pets' names).
· Contain any consecutive letters or numbers.

Are Password Managers Safe?

Of course, you may have hesitancy when it comes to such a delicate subject. Based on information from Norton, a renowned security organization:

· Password managers provide strong encryption, like AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), which serves as a hefty defense against cybercriminals.

· These tools generate, store, and keep track of unique and different passwords for each of your online accounts – making it easier for you to follow the "strong" password guidelines.

· Most password managers are easy to use. They save time because you no longer have to remember all of your login info. You'll only need to know one master password that will unlock all of your passwords.

IMPORTANT: Any password manager program is only as safe to use as the person using it. Guard against: Leaving your master password exposed; leaving your desk for the day while signed into your password manager account and so forth. These behaviors can put your passwords at risk.

Google Chrome Password Manager

Google's Password Manager can be used on your desktop with the Google Chrome browser or on an Android or iPhone as well. It helps you to 1) Create strong and unique passwords, 2) Provide protection to your saved info, and 3) Automatically fill them in for you.

Not only can you use this tool to house your passwords, but Google Chrome also has a built-in way to fill in forms with your address/contact info as well as payments by saving your credit card details.

Set Up the Password or Forms Tool

[turn on sync]

To use either of these options, first, you need to turn ON the Sync feature and enable the Password Manager (you only have to do this once).

· Sign into your Google account using the Chrome browser.
· Click your profile photo in the top-right corner of the screen. IMPORTANT: This is in the browser toolbar.
· Make sure you see "Sync is on" in that window. If it isn't, click the green button to enable it.

Additionally, to make sure the Password Manager is enabled:

· Click your profile icon, then click on the tiny key symbol under your email address.
· On this page, make sure the "Offer to save passwords" option is toggled ON.

[turn on sync]

Add Passwords to Chrome Password Manager

[save password]

Now that you have the "Offer to save passwords" turned on, you can add your secure data in one of three ways:

1. For new accounts.

Each time you go to a site and Google detects you're entering new login credentials, you can "accept" the offer to save the new password and it will be added to your manager.

[add from website]

2. Add them from the website.

· Go to the site where you want to add a password.
· Enter your username and password, but don't log in.
· After entering your username and password, you'll see a little key icon in the address bar at the top of the screen. Click it.
· The box that appears will ask you to save your password and username.
· Tap Save.

3. Add a password from the Settings menu.

· Click on your profile icon in the Chrome browser and then click the icon of a key.
· Or, in your Chrome browser click on the three vertical dots, select Settings, then Autofill in the left menu and Password Manager from the choices.
· Here you can click the Add button to enter a new website and credentials.
· You can also view, edit or delete existing passwords in this part of your account.

[add details]

Add Fill-Form Details to be Saved in Google Chrome

You can also add personal data like your name, address and payment details similarly to the password process ... so that when you're filling in a form online (such as buying a product or registering for an account) you can do it with one click.

If you didn't already, turn on the Sync option as outlined above. Now you can add (or change) payment and address info in Chrome.

[save address]

To use the Fill-Form tool for your address:

· From your computer, open a Chrome browser window.
· In the top right of the browser window, click your profile image and then the map icon for "Addresses and more."
· This will open Chrome Settings for Address and more.
· Make sure the "Save and fill addresses" option is toggled ON.
· Click the Add button to save an address to your account.

[save address]

[payment method]

Enter your Credit Card payment details:

Similar to the process above:

· From your computer, open a Chrome browser window.
· In the top right of the browser window, click your profile image and then the credit card icon for "Payment methods."
· This will open Chrome Settings for Payment Methods.
· Make sure the "Save and fill payment methods" option is toggled ON.
· Click the Add button to save a payment method to your account.

[save payment method]

Now when you visit a website page using your Chrome browser and there's a form or payment info to complete, Chrome will prompt you with a suggestion. Just click on the item to auto-fill the form.

[form fill]

GRAPHICS: Create a Gradient Effect

Have you ever wished you could create a sophisticated graphic background that had a sliding color look? You know, where it's dark at the top and gradually gets lighter?

This type of treatment is often subtle but presents a powerful impression of class . . . of advanced professionalism.

Communications: Choice of Words

Which is it - Bi or Semi?

I was trying to describe how frequently we offer a Tech-Talk webinar. The reality is that we do two of them every month.

So is that bi-monthly? Or semi-monthly?

Looking it up, here is what you find:

· Bi- is a prefix meaning two or twice
· Semi- is a prefix meaning half

OK, that means we have bi-monthly webinars, right?

Well, apparently there is debate around the actual definition of bi- being both two and twice. (Semi- is always half, so no problem there.) But assuming bi- can be two or twice ... that means that bimonthly can be every two months or twice a month.

That's a big difference!

For example, think about getting a paycheck bimonthly: Is it twice a month or every other month? You'd like to know, wouldn't you?

So what should I say?

It's tricky because semimonthly Tech-Talk webinars would always mean twice a month. But the reader may be confused with that term (even if it is the right one).

To avoid confusion, perhaps I should just use specific wording that avoids the whole bi- and semi- issue ... something like "Webinars are held twice a month."

Leadership Quote: E. M. Kelly

Have you ever heard of E. M. Kelly?

I did not know this gentleman but I found a quote by him that was worth sharing. Lt. Kelly is a historical figure from the early 1900s and was apparently well regarded ... enough to have a website devoted to his story and be found when looking for a worthy leadership quote.

There is a difference

between a

boss and a leader;

A boss says, "Go!"

A leader says, "Let's Go!"

~ E. M. Kelly

A question for you: On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 high), how often are you in leader mode (Let's Go) vs. boss mode (Go)?
