HARDWARE - What to Do When Technology Goes Berserk
Intermediate
A few weeks ago my dad called me from his landline because he was having problems with his mobile phone. He couldn't make or receive calls or text messages. He could open apps and take pictures -- so not all the functions were affected. It was just weird! What could he do?
Well, before I Googled the issue to see what fixes might be offered, I told him to turn his phone off completely. Once he powered down his phone, waited a few minutes, and turned it back on, his problem was gone!
[computer problem]
Here's another scenario. A colleague had the attachment icon missing in a new Gmail message. It just wasn't there in the toolbar. She needed to add a document to an email and couldn't.
Again, before researching potential solutions, I had her completely sign out of Google (and Gmail) and then sign back in again (not just close the browser window, but get entirely out of the account). And guess what? The attachment icon came back!
We all have technical difficulties like these once in a while. Instead of going to your IT department or wasting time with workarounds, try one or more of these seven steps first.
1. Computer Issues: Restart (Not Shut Down)
Did you know that about 90% of your issues can be solved with a restart? It's always the first question I ask when someone has a problem … "Did you try a reboot?"
We're talking about using this technique for desktops, laptops and tablets.
[restart]
But the next question is, "Should you choose to Shut Down ... or Restart?" (What's the difference, right?)
· Shut Down - turn off the device. Power down.
· Restart - make the computer begin again from scratch.
· Reboot - a general term to do either shut down or restart.
Update Your Thinking!
We used to believe that shutting down the computer would clean everything up for a fresh start. And, even though at the time, a restart was a faster way to go, it was not as complete. So the best thing to do then, before 2012, was to Shut Down.
Things have changed! Now the reverse is true. (Microsoft made significant enhancements to the start-up and reboot processes.) Now, to fix problems, do a Restart!
· If you want to turn off your computer (power it down) by all means do a shutdown.
· But, if you're trying to fix your device because something weird is going on, do a restart.
A shutdown doesn't clear out the cache and clean things up (solve problems). A restart does because it works with all Windows devices, drivers, and more. Everything is restarted from scratch. A restart cleans up your cache and RAM (Random Access Memory) files so that your computer's brain is less muggy ... and problems disappear!
2. Internet Issues: Sign Out and In Again
Have you ever been working in a web-based program like email, or a Google app for example… and it freezes ... or not all the functions are available?
[logout]
Sure, you can restart your computer and that will work, but very often it's better and faster to simply address the web program issue.
How? Completely sign out of your account. Don't just close out the browser window, but click the "Sign out" option to leave the program completely. Then open a fresh browser window and sign back in. Most of the time that fixes the problem.
This technique works on mobile apps as well. For example, my banking app would not let me take a picture of a check to deposit. I closed the app and then opened it again, and that fixed the issue.
Another problem could be a browser compatibility issue. Occasionally web programs work better in specific browsers. So if you're using Google Chrome, switch to Firefox or Edge to see if that helps. That's a quick fix, right? Just change browsers temporarily.
3. Software Issues: Uninstall and Reinstall
When closing or signing out of a program doesn't work, you may need a fresh copy of the software.
Here's an example: I was trying to join a Zoom meeting and it was giving me fits. I went round and round and could not enter the Zoom room. I tried exiting the program and re-entering with a fresh browser, but no luck.
[uninstall]
The solution? Zoom, like many web platforms, installs a small piece of software on your computer.
Sometimes this can get corrupted. So what you need to do is uninstall the software and then reinstall it.
Just go to Programs, then Add/ Remove Programs and delete the problematic one.
In the case of a program like Zoom, the next time you try to join a meeting it will prompt you to reinstall the software as it won't be detected. That usually will be the fix!
TIP: Not only can this technique solve issues for software installed on your computer, it also works well with apps on your phone. Just delete and start with a fresh install.
4. Remote and Other Issues: Check the Batteries
[remote]
This sounds obvious, but when you have a device with a battery, like a mouse or remote control, a simple battery change could solve the issue.
For example, I couldn't get my Roku to work on my television. I kept pressing buttons on the remote, but the only thing that seemed to be working was the volume up/down. And because that worked, I didn't think it was the batteries. However, after putting in fresh ones the remote control was fully operational, and my issue was solved!
5. Pull the Plug
[unplug]
You may not have heard of this "fix" but it is remarkably effective.
For devices that are plugged into an electrical outlet such as:
1. Landline phone
2. Answering machine
3. Computer
4. Fax/copy machine
5. Modem and router
6. Streaming device
7. Television, and more!
Unplug them, wait a minute, then plug them back in. Why? Because static electricity builds up over time and needs to be released.
It seems like a simple thing, but when you power down your device(s) and unplug them from the wall or the power strip it cleans up the internal electronics a bit. When should you do this? Whenever weird things are happening with them!
TIP: This works with connections/wiring between devices as well… like the cable between your computer to a printer, or routers and modem cables. Shut devices off, unplug cables, then unplug from the power source. Wait a few minutes and reconnect.
6. Mobile Device Issues: Power Completely Down
[power off]
Similar to a computer reboot, powering down a mobile device can solve issues. In fact, experts recommend powering off your phone at least once a week. And we know it works ... remember the story at the top of the article.
You see, each time you use an app on your phone, cache is added to your device's operating system (this is a memory storage area in the phone that stores copies of info that may be needed in the near future so it can be accessed faster). Shutting off your phone periodically will help clear away unneeded data so that you prevent and fix problems.

INTERNET - What is a VPN and Why Should I Use it?
I'm getting ready to travel this week and will have a long layover. I want to be able to work on my laptop in the airport or at my hotel, but I'm leery about using public Wi-Fi. It's time to set up a VPN so that I can have a secure connection when using the Internet.
What is a VPN? A Virtual Private Network connects your device (PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone) to an outside server to...

Communications: Talking
Turn a disagreement into a positive
Say "Yes" and then build in the direction you want. This can be a very handy technique!
Listen to yourself when you talk to others... and notice how often you respond to what someone else is saying, with a "no".
· "No, that's not right."
· "No, I disagree."
· "No, it's different from that."
Typically this happens when you have a different idea or you disagree with someone's thought. Sometimes though, it can occur even when you are agreeing!
We use the word "no" as a way to interrupt, "I want to talk now; listen to me". (I know it sounds weird, but watch for it.)
Here's a clever trick you can use to disagree in a way that actually sounds supportive and has a better chance of getting your opinion heard.
Redirect the thought by starting with a bridge statement... for example, say "in addition to that" and then follow it up with your point of view.
You see, you eliminate resistance when you don't toss out the "no" word first thing.
You don't want to give the impression you are countering what was said, but rather building on it... even though you'll be taking the conversation in a whole new direction, possibly in an opposite one.
Example for responding to a statement you disagree with, but you don't want to say "No, let's forget the whole thing."
· "Yes, and we can come up with a modified version."
· "Have you considered..."
· "In addition, we could do it tomorrow instead."
The trick: Don't worry about the incongruity of what you're saying. It works!

Leadership
How Often Do You Give Praise?
True Story.
A month after the articles we wrote on Organizational Indifference were published in numerous journals we received a phone call from an engineer in California.
He said...
“I saw your topic in 'Facilities Engineer' and I really liked it.
But there was one thing you said that
would have to be changed for our environment.
You had a quiz, with the question,
'How often do you receive praise at least once every seven days?'
In our world, you would want to ask,
'How often do you receive praise at least once every seven years."
When we tell the story in person, people tend to laugh. Why? Because it is so sad, yet so real.
Ask Yourself…
· How well do I observe when others do great things ... have creative ideas?
· How often do I give praise? What can I do to make this a habit?
