WINDOWS 11 – A Brand New Interface and Task Bar

Intermediate

[Windows 11]

Has the computer you use been upgraded to Windows 11? Or maybe you purchased a new one and this new platform came with it.

If you're just getting started with Windows 11, learning to navigate a new layout can be frustrating and it takes time to figure out where certain items have been moved to.

When upgrading to this version, two of the major changes you'll see are: 1) a brand new interface and 2) the taskbar. Let's look at what has changed from Windows 10 and what you can customize.

[windows update]

NOTE: You can convert from Windows 10 to 11 fairly easily (and at no cost) if you're in a position to make software updates on your computer. To check and see if you can upgrade from Windows 10 to 11, go to Start, then select Settings, Update and Security, Windows Update and click the Check for Updates button.

Don't worry if you get a message that says "Your PC doesn't currently meet the minimum requirements to run Windows 11." If your computer isn't compatible for some reason, Microsoft plans to support Windows 10 until October 2025.

However, before you try and update, first read this article<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001pz_2AP0J2GInAGxAkMdzArOxna6hbQmEinKIwYjQueSDB2PrvhZCTJqBxjCzDwcNqwVqXWRR7OJRfSIqqtoj7UKU188h_vMCcfIo5_qWyytOy_Xdoki4laO9TgRoKB3GbSJlcX6gM2g83UQr0gQoWYA-MLDcm4KAezVS0QYWzqAQrsDQEAhLM1m42KqjNxMMg7bytn9CQ7THPuPXCZhO5BE3EnvkxiwO%26c%3DUOr2Y5gnyGLR1D5sZp9yac5nOK4Ueyblc7z9yeYyrhqo283Beg4CAQ%3D%3D%26ch%3DBv8Y83wYTNkz7rN0_7XoRXiDJpB15yGZNB1JOWMLAfyst5M_m7dQgw%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7Cc02b894d7c5f49ba769a08db2fcddfcf%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638156333492732060%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=v5r%2F%2B1YOZSa2nY3ufNYUnnry8fKgNd8x9KR%2F4fTt6wA%3D&reserved=0> on what you need to know and do ahead of time.

A Brand New Interface and Taskbar

The first thing you'll notice is the Start menu has moved! It has been traditionally in the bottom left corner of the screen. But in Windows 11, it has been moved to the center of the screen within the Taskbar ... so that it is front and center. TIP: You can move the Start button back to the left -- see how in customization options below.

[start menu]

Customizing Your Taskbar

Everyone has their own way to work with their favorite programs and shortcuts, so here are four tips to navigate this new layout and customize your Windows 11 Taskbar to meet your needs:

[start menu]

1. Start Menu

When you click on the Start button (the Windows icon) some of the options you're used to in Windows 10 are not showing.

To get to items like Run, Task Manager or Settings, the secret is to RIGHT-CLICK on the Windows icon.

2. Move the Start Menu Back to the Left

If you feel more comfortable with the Windows 10-like settings, you can move the Start menu to the left. Here's how:
· Right-click on Start and choose Settings.
· Select Personalization from the left menu.
· From the center menu, select Taskbar.
· Scroll to the bottom and click on Taskbar behaviors to open it up.
· In Taskbar Alignment choose Left from the drop-down menu instead of Center.

[move taskbar]

3. Customize Apps in the Taskbar

Also in the Taskbar Personalization window, if you don't use some of the default programs that are pinned to the Taskbar, you normally can right-click and choose to remove them. However, there are a few that are locked in place, and you need to go to Settings to make changes.

For example, if you don't use the Chat feature remove it from the Taskbar to make room for another shortcut. In the Taskbar personalization window, you can toggle OFF items you don't want visible.

· Right-click and choose Settings, then Personalization from the left menu.
· Go to Taskbar items in the center menu.
· Toggle Off (or On) any of the options.

[taskbar personalization]

4. Add Apps to Taskbar

To add short icons to your Taskbar for quick access to your favorite programs, the easiest way is to open the app, then right-click on it in the Taskbar and choose Pin to taskbar.
[add apps to task bar]

Or, if the app is not open, go to the Start menu, find the app in the pinned list (or in the All apps section), right-click and choose Pin to taskbar.

The New Start Menu

When you click on the Start Menu it looks a bit different than prior versions of Windows. See each of the numbered items in the corresponding image below.

1. The Search bar is at the top.
2. Pinned apps are in the middle.
3. All apps button to view an alphabetical list is in the upper right.
4. A "Recommended" apps section is near the bottom (see how to customize what appears here below).
5. Your Profile icon/name is at the bottom left.
6. Shortcuts are at the bottom right (see how to customize this by adding Folders, Settings, and Power options below).

[options]

Modify Your Start Menu

To make it easier to get to the apps that you use all the time, you can choose what is showing in the Start Menu (in the "Pinned" section of the image above).

· To delete an app from the Pinned apps section that you don't use very often, right-click on top of it and choose Unpin from Start.

· To add an app that you want in the Pinned apps section, go to All apps (#3 in the image above), find the app, right-click on it, and choose Pin to Start.

· You can also change what shows below in the Recommended section (#4 above) if you don't like what you see. Right-click on the Windows button and select Settings. From the left menu select Personalization and then click on Start from the list. Toggle OFF any of the three options: Show recently added apps, Show most used apps and Show recently open items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer.

[personalization]

· To add items in place of the ones you took out, right-click and choose Settings, then Personalization again from the right menu. Select Start and then click the Folders option. Now you can toggle ON some shortcuts to add to the Start menu.

Communications: Writing

Avoid (or Explain) Acronyms

It's so easy to toss in an acronym when you're writing because it's short and simple, right?

Example: "I wonder if AOC could work with the ALA because at the EOD it might be helpful."

Did you get that? Even if you did, do you think everyone will?

If you want to be an effective communicator, it's best to assume the reader may not know the acronym!

Using these two techniques will make your writing clearer and easier to understand.

· Write the words fully out, followed by the acronym in parentheses. Example: American Library Association (ALA).

· Alternate using the full name (always with the acronym in parentheses) and the acronym alone in longer text where you're referencing it repeatedly.

Translating the example above: "I wonder if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) could work with the American Library Association (ALA) because at the end of the day (EOD) it might be helpful."

Leadership

Sentence Completion Tool

Do you ever find yourself in a situation where you wish you knew more about what was going on in a person's mind?

The Sentence Completion exercise is guaranteed to produce enlightening information. We'll show you the details below, but first, let me share how this is a very versatile and exploratory tool.

For instance, you can use this unique exercise to find out things like:
· What someone expects when applying for a job.
· What they would like to contribute if they get the position.
· Ideas a person may have if assigned a new project.
· What do they feel are the strengths/weaknesses of the organization.
· Ways in which the department's activities support its mission.
· And the list goes on...

How to Use the Tool (Example: job interview)

When I'm hiring, I always end an interview session with a Sentence Completion exercise. I hand them a blank sheet of paper and ask them to write the phrases:

"One of the reasons I'd like this job is..." and

"One of the concerns I have with this job is..."

I tell them the rules are simple:

· Complete the sentence 10 times
· Do it as quickly as possible, whatever comes to your mind first.
· The answers can be duplicated or contradictory.
· They can be serious or silly.
· They must complete all ten - even if they don't have more answers to give.

[numbered list]

I guarantee that you'll discover very quickly who has the right attitude, confidence and approach to the job or task you're offering.

Other examples of starter questions for the sentence completion tool:

· "One of the things I'd like to do with this new project is..."
· "One of the things I'm concerned about [need to know, I don't think should be included] with this new project is..."

· "One of the ways I see our organization doing well is..."
· "One of the ways I see our organization can improve is..."
