Apply to Attend Online Course: Defending Intellectual Freedom

The State Library is pleased to offer 20 pre-paid registrations for Censorship and Book Bans: Tactics for Defending Intellectual Freedom<https://www.libraryjournal.com/event/censorship-and-banned-books-apr-2024>, an online course organized by Library Journal and School Library Journal, on Wednesday, April 17 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Pacific. Sessions will be recorded for on-demand viewing.

The State Library cannot reimburse the cost for someone who may have already registered for the course.

Course Description
In this half-day online course, you will learn tangible ways to handle censorship, including tips for finding allies and building coalitions, tactics for creating inclusive programs despite censorship issues, and strategies to ensure your library policies are up to date to help proactively defend intellectual freedom. You will discuss ways to protect yourself as well as best practices for talking about censorship externally to help equip you with appropriate responses when challenges arise.

After you leave this course, you should have the ability to:

  * Advocate for your programs, curricula, collections, and services
  * Conduct a policy audit and ensure your protections are up to date and comprehensive
  * Make a plan to find allies and build coalitions to support you
  * Access resources and communities dealing with similar challenges
  * Develop and refer to talking points and best practices for speaking at school board meetings and connecting with stakeholders and community members
  * Create a plan for how to cope and take care of yourself in the midst of challenges

See the course program<https://www.libraryjournal.com/event/censorship-and-banned-books-apr-2024#program> for session details.

Eligible Staff

  *   Work for or on behalf of a library in Oregon, including at a school, district, or ESD or at a public, academic, or tribal library;
  *   And have library responsibilities that intersect with intellectual freedom in some way (ex: would be included in responding to a book challenge);
  * And commit to attending the live online sessions on April 17 or watching the session recordings by April 30.
  * School library staff can be in licensed or classified positions.

We are hoping to have a balance of staff across library types and across the state.

In order to gain the most impact from learning events pre-paid by the State Library, we ask all participants to engage fully (attend, participate, discuss, and share).

Deadline
Applications<https://www.cognitoforms.com/StateLibraryOfOregon/ApplyToAttendOnlineCourseDefendingIntellectualFreedomApril2024> will be accepted through 11:59 Pacific on Sunday, March 17. Applicants will be notified of their status by March 22.

Please Note
To complete this course, learners can expect to spend about 4 hours attending the live online sessions or watching the recordings. If you are unable to agree to this, please be kind and leave a seat or place for someone else.

Participants are required to attend or watch all sessions, submit a copy of their certificate of completion to the State Library, and respond to a feedback survey by April 30. Failure to do so without notifying the State Library before the end of the course may impact participants' eligibility to participate in future events paid for by the State Library.

Questions? Please ask.

Thanks,
Jen
