Every Person a Hero:
The Path to True Success
A message from Rick West
In our pursuit of success, we often look to individual greatness. But the truth is, no person stands alone in their accomplishments. The most meaningful success is not achieved by standing above others, but by recognizing the heroism in everyone.
As Native people, we understand this deeply. In our cultures, leadership is not about dominance but about service. A chief, an elder, a culture bearer—none of these roles exist in isolation. Their strength comes from the people they serve, and their success is measured not by personal achievement, but by how well they lift others.
Today, as we navigate political uncertainty, we must apply the same approach—not only in our institutions but in our everyday lives. We must treat every person we encounter as vital, as worthy of respect, as a voice that matters. When we do this, we create a society that is driven by hope. We create a political culture that is not defined by division but by mutual responsibility. We create communities that are resilient, because they are built on the belief that every person has a role to play.
The world will not change because of a single leader, a single election, or a single policy. It will change when we decide, collectively, to recognize the heroism in each other. When we uplift those around us, we do more than build better communities—we build a better world.
Now is the time to act. Now is the time to lead—not through power, but through service. Now is the time to ensure that no one is invisible, that no one is left behind, and that no one is denied the dignity of being seen as a hero.
That is how we navigate these uncertain times. That is how we succeed.
With infinite respect for all you do and all you are,
Rick West
