Who Owns Our Ancestors Voices?

This article by highly regarded Hopi attorney Trevor Reed explores an increased sense of self-determination when asserting ownership claims to pre-1972 sound recordings made on tribal lands. This is significant for lawmakers and judges, as recordings of Native Americans performing ceremonies, songs, oral histories, and other oral literature make up a substantial portion of the media housed in American museums, universities, and government institutions. Fair Use as Cultural Appropriation

This article by Hopi attorney Trevor Reed evaluates fair use as a gatekeeping mechanism for unauthorized uses of copyrighted culture. Copyright law provides at least some protection against appropriations of Indigenous culture...but it is admittedly an imperfect fit for combatting cultural appropriation. NOTABLE PROJECTS
Archaeology and the Oral Tradition

In Greenland, storytelling has long been a vital tradition, especially during the dark winter months when communities would gather to share stories. This deep-rooted oral tradition preserved myths and legends for generations. By combining oral history with archaeology, this work seeks to honor and elevate these ancestral voices within academic and historical discourse.

Reclaiming Indigenous Oral Histories
ATALM representatives recently participated in a convening of tribal cultural leaders, oral historians, archivists, and funders to discuss the status and future of Native oral histories held in non-Native institutions.

The discussion centered on the need for Indigenous communities to have greater agency over their oral histories while recognizing the role that collecting institutions can play in ensuring respectful stewardship. Historically, many Indigenous oral histories have been extracted, misinterpreted, and housed in institutions without the guidance of the communities from which they originate. Moving forward, meaningful collaboration and shared stewardship agreements are key to ensuring that oral histories are accessed, interpreted, and preserved in ways that align with Indigenous cultural values and protocols.

Through programs, research initiatives, and direct engagement with Native communities and collecting institutions, ATALM has developed recommendations to guide this important work. These recommendations are a starting point and are meant to spark further discussions. Read the Draft Recommendations HERE.<https://atalm.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1b5fd0b3926b2a0236f0325a1&id=d4d4a5928c&e=c63c6f579f>
What Matters to YOU?

Each edition of The Exchange features a singular poll question that helps ATALM learn more about your priorities. Results are published in the next edition of The Exchange.

In the last edition we asked “What is the biggest challenge your Native cultural institution faces today?” Here is what you told us:
In ranking order, greatest needs were identified as Funding and Financial Sustainability (48%), Staffing and Professional Development (28%), Preservation and Return of cultural materials (8%), Community Engagement and Audience Development (8%), Technology and Digital Access (4%), Other (4%). The “other” responses were not relevant to the question.

We are now asking about the most important steps to reclaiming Native recordings held in non-Native collecting institutions. Be sure to respond to the poll below!
