Later this month, PLA is hosting a free webinar with tips and best practices for responding to ICE in the library. Get more details here: Responding to ICE at the Library: Real World Approaches | ALAeLearning<https://elearning.ala.org/local/catalog/view/product.php?productid=1677&_zs=3v8vg1&_zl=0E4bA>
While this national webinar will undoubtedly have great information, Oregon is a Sanctuary State. It is against the law for a public body, such as state and local government office, to participate (directly or indirectly) in immigration enforcement without a judicial warrant.
Public libraries, schools, community colleges, and universities are considered a public body <https://www.doj.state.or.us/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Public-Body-Glossary.pdf> for this law.
Oregon's DOJ has a wealth of resources available: Oregon Department of Justice Sanctuary Promise Guidance - Oregon Department of Justice<https://www.doj.state.or.us/oregon-department-of-justice/civil-rights/sanctuary-promise/>, including:
? Model policies
? Community Toolkit
? Outreach Materials
? Hotline for violations report
Knowing the difference between a judicial and an administrative warrant is important. The State Library has taken the step to label any areas that are Authorized Users Only, especially if it's a door that is not normally locked.
There are also a number of resources about immigration<https://slo.oregon.gov/CommunityEngagement/ImmigrationResources> on the State Library's Community Engagement for Libraries<https://slo.oregon.gov/CommunityEngagement/> info guide.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Wendy
