[Answerland-summit] 2020 Oregon Reference Summit to be held at LCC

You may absolutely be right, Nat! I forgot that “the Center” wasn’t the same as the Center for Meeting and Learning, and so my calling it that in the email below could have easily confused Claire.

And I’m in agreement that 3 long sessions + lightning talks make for a decent day of learning, without being overwhelming (hopefully!), so not suggesting we add another…wanted to make sure we had all the information, though, just in case!

I think our concern was that then there would 4 different sessions happening during the 80 minute slot…making the audiences more sparse (remember, sessions will be taking place in the larger auditorium room as well)

But, if this doesn’t feel like a big problem, I’m fine with offering this session as well.

However, are we sure she is referring to the Center for Meeting and Learning (where we will be) or that other building called The Center Building? I just didn’t see a computer lab on our walk through anywhere, and the option is not listed as part of the event space: https://www.lanecc.edu/center/main-campus-event-space-and-maps

FYI – response from Claire at LCC. Are we sure we don’t want the computer lab after all? She makes it sound like the Library classroom is actually inside The Center, rather than the library…

I’ll certainly cancel with her, but was grateful for her quick action!!

(BTW, Natalie or Tamara, could you please update my email address for the Answerland-Summit listsmart group? It wouldn’t let me send this with the listserv addy as recipient, bc my new email is not associated with it…THANK YOU!)

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your message. Yes, I can reserve the Library classroom (CEN 234) for the event on Friday May 31. It seats 32 with individual PC work stations, and has an instruction station with projector/podium set-up. There is a large white board and a smaller movable board. This location makes sense with your other events in the Center building. The ILAGO meeting is being held on a different part of campus because the Library is closed on Saturdays.

It may be easiest if you direct email about the Reference Summit to me and I'll share information with other librarians here.

Let me know if you need other support or assistance.

Claire

Good morning, Claire and all at LCC!
We are reviewing the program proposals for the Summit, and a question has arisen: Might there be a computer lab in the library in which we could hold a session? Or does the library have a mobile computer lab that could be utilized? We currently have 2 rooms available to us in The Center, but we have at least one proposal that requires participants to have computer access.

Happy to discuss in more detail but wanted to throw this out for a possibly “quick” yea or nay.

Thanks so much!

Hi Claire,
Thanks for the reply! Sorry for my delay in getting back to you; I was on vacation for the 2nd half of January and am finally now getting caught back up.

Ironically enough, until the day after you emailed me, there hadn’t yet been any announcements about the Summit. However, I see on the 16th, they sent out a “save the date” notice (attached) along with the call for proposals (attached, and on the OrRS website: https://sites.google.com/olaweb.org/oregon-reference-summit/home/presentation-proposals) via the Libs-Or listserv. Did you see that?

Still, we only just signed the contract with LCC in the last 4-6 weeks, so it feels like we’re still at the beginning! The first 2 Summits were held in Corvallis and we thought it would be interesting to switch things up this year. Also, we purposely scheduled it for the day before the ILAGO conference in hopes both events might appeal to some attendees. As promotional things are distributed – presumably done mostly via email instead of PDF flyers or whatever, since we’re focused on reaching library workers rather than the general public – I will certainly share with you all.

The training I’m suggesting is something separate, so can be done at any time that’s convenient and desired on your end. As the Lane County Law Librarian, I’d like to believe it’s helpful for other Lane County library workers to know about the public services we provide, and how I can offer assistance and support for both staff and patrons. In addition, I go deeper into 1-3 general areas (legal research, legal reference, and legal referrals), depending on time and audience needs. I recently conducted a training for Springfield Public Library staff, and presenting another one for EPL staff in a couple of weeks. I like to tailor trainings to the audience, so getting a feel from you guys regarding the types of ‘legal questions’ posed to reference staff or particular challenges could be helpful for me as I prepare.

If you’d like to consider doing something similar for LCC library staff in the spring, the 2nd and 3rd week of March, the first 2 weeks in April, and much of May & June look good for me…absolutely no pressure, just putting it out there!

Thanks again for following up & perhaps we’ll talk soon,
Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your message and for letting us know about the upcoming OR Reference Summit. I may be speaking only for myself, but I hadn't heard a word about this being on our campus. How convenient for us! Please do share whatever promotional material you create and we can share it out.

Also, I have added your idea about legal reference training to our reference team agenda and see if there is any interest. I see you are now located in Eugene; would you want the training to be scheduled near the date of the Summit, or far from it?

My best,

Claire

Hello,
I’m reaching out on behalf of the planning team for the 2020 Oregon Reference Summit (sponsored by the State Library and the Oregon Library Association), a day-long conference for library workers specifically focused on reference services. This will be the 3rd time we’ve held the annual event, and I’m pleased to say we’ve arranged to bring it to Eugene this year!

We want to make sure we advertise the event itself (slated for Friday, May 29), as well as the program proposal submission dates, as extensively as possible; since it’s to be held on the LCC campus, I thought you and your staff would certainly want to know about it, and perhaps even be willing to help promote it through your channels.

I knew Rick Stoddart through the Oregon Library Association and, at one point, we’d discussed the possibility of my conducting a legal reference training for LCC library staff…but I confess I never made it over there, even for a visit. Perhaps this would be a good excuse to do so, if you might be open to my stopping by sometime?

FWIW I’ve cc-ed your reference & instruction librarians here too, as I hope they’ll be encouraged to take part in the summit; as a fellow Lane County librarian, I’d love to eventually meet them face-to-face as well! ☺

Thanks very much for your time & I look forward to chatting further,
Sue
