Oregon Reference Summit Presents 2022

The Oregon Reference Summit is inviting you to join us August 23rd for a program entitled Researching a Family Legend: the Intersection of Legal Research and Genealogy for our August bi-monthly program.

Our presenter, Lee Van Duzer of Washington County Law Library, will explore the intersection of legal and historical research, showing some of the more advanced features of legal research tools. Please join us Tuesday, August 23rd at 10am PST.

Researching a Family Legend: The Intersection of Legal Research and Genealogy

When a patron asked us to track down a relative who supposedly sued the government and won, we had to reach beyond traditional legal research to find the case and its history. Through this tale we will explore the intersection of legal research and history, and see some of the more advanced features of legal research tools. The name of the relative didn't yield a case, but it led us to news articles in the genealogy databases. Those articles gave us the keys to unlock doors into case law, a private bill in Congress, and the complete story to share with our patron. Presented by Lee Van Duzer from Washington County Law Library.

Learner Outcomes:
Participants will learn basic use of legal research databases
Participants will learn some advanced techniques in legal research
Participants will learn about federal legislative research
Participants will understand the value of cross-disciplinary tools
