Greetings!
Paige Hirt and Monica Parmley of Foundations Counseling and Consultation
Services, LLC, invite you to attend the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills
Training (ASIST) on March 13th & 14th, 2014. The ASIST workshop is for those
who want to increase their skills in order to help prevent the immediate risk of
suicide for youth, consumers, clients, family, friends, coworkers and community
members.
Statistics outline an alarming need to increase our skills in suicide
intervention:
? Each year there are more than 550 Oregonians who died by suicide and more than
1800 hospitalizations due to suicide attempts.
? Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Oregonians ages 15-34, and
the 9th leading cause of death among all ages in Oregon.
? On average, 75 youth aged 10 to 24 have killed themselves in this state every
year during the past decade.
? Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death of college students, killing more
than 1000 students every year.
? Up to 40% of college students report experiencing depression during an
academic year. Parents and students, college staff and friends need to be able
to distinguish the normal temporary college blues from depression and be able to
identify a person at risk for suicide?.
The intended audience for the ASIST training may include, but is not limited to,
school staff, mental health providers, medical providers, clergy, human resource
personnel, law enforcement, student life workers, youth workers, family members,
etc.
Here is what some participants have had to say about their participation in
ASIST:
? ? This training will prove very valuable for our frequent encounters with
suicidal subjects. The suicide intervention model presented will serve as a
great framework for interventions, and a guide for better encounters. ?
Portland Police Bureau Officer
? ? I really appreciated the model?s flexibility, the emphasis on the person?s
human dignity and language to empower and support another human. ? Peer
Coordinator, Empowerment Initiatives
? ? It was a positive experience all the way around. I am grateful this
training was not just for crisis workers as many people can utilize this tool to
greater advantage .? Clackamas County, Crisis Line Manager
ASIST is an internationally recognized suicide prevention training program and
is in the Best Practice Registry for suicide prevention.
Find the attached flier and registration form for more information. Additional
information can be found on our website at www.foundationsccs.com

LivingWorks announces Dr. Phil Rodgers as Vice President of Design, Development, and Evaluation
CALGARY-LivingWorks Education Inc. is excited to announce that Dr. Phil Rodgers has joined our team as the new Vice President of Design, Development and Evaluation. Dr. Rodgers brings extensive experience in evaluating and reviewing suicide prevention initiatives, and will play a major role in shaping LivingWorks' new programs, including the upcoming suicide to Hope workshop.
Dr. Rodgers received his Doctorate in Research and Evaluation Methodology from Utah State University in 2003. Shortly afterward, he joined the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) as an evaluation scientist, where he managed the Best Practices Registry for Suicide Prevention in collaboration with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. In this capacity, he managed a team that reviewed over 100 different suicide prevention programs while developing a thorough understanding of the elements that contribute to the success of suicide prevention programs.
Dr. Rodgers hopes to contribute to the LivingWorks' thirty-year legacy as the world's leading suicide prevention training company. "LivingWorks is known throughout the field for the quality and effectiveness of their programs," he said. "I hope to add to the high regard of LivingWorks by helping to create new programs and improving on those that are already in place."
As Vice President of Design, Development and Evaluation, Dr. Rodgers will manage the development of new programs, evaluate existing programs to ensure their effectiveness, facilitate rigorous external reviews, and engage the trainer network on matters relating to program development and evaluation.
"My immediate goals are to see suicide to Hope through the pilot and field trial phases, encourage and support rigorous evaluation of LivingWorks programs, and develop resources that will aid in the effective implementation of LivingWorks programs across multiple settings," Rodgers stated. "In the future, I would also like to see the development of programs that directly serve the needs of those with lived experience of suicide-those who have attempted suicide or have been at heightened risk."
LivingWorks is honored to have Dr. Rodgers on board. With the added benefit of his expertise and experience, the company will continue to pursue its mission of building suicide-safer communities around the world.
