Avakian Announces New PWAC Appointees
Committee co-chairs will serve another one-year term

PORTLAND—Oregon’s Labor and Industries Commissioner Brad Avakian has named three new members to the state Prevailing Wage Advisory Committee (PWAC), and re-appointed the current co-chairs for one more year leading the group. The new appointees are Ken Stroup of the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, Darrin Lane of Linn County and Steve Malany of P&C Construction Company. The new members fill vacancies created by the term limits that Avakian established in 2009.

“PWAC is an effective, collaborative committee, continually benefitting from new energy and perspectives,” Avakian said. “Being able to bring in people with the experience and talents of Ken, Steve and Darrin is an advantage that will benefit PWAC and the State of Oregon for years to come.”

PWAC was created by legislative action in 2003, directing the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries to appoint an equal number of representatives from management and labor in the building and construction industry who perform work on public works contracts. The committee is charged with advising the Commissioner on matters regarding the prevailing wage rate laws that apply to public construction projects.

“PWAC is an important forum for the discussion of complex policy issues,” Avakian added. “The committee members provide dedicated service and decision makers can rely on the well-considered recommendations of PWAC to advance the best policies for the State of Oregon.”

PWAC’s current co-chairs are Norman Malbin of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 48, and Shawn Miller of the Associated Builders and Contractors and Independent Electrical Contractors of Oregon. The committee is next scheduled to meet on Thursday, April 19th, at 3pm at the International Union of Operating Engineers Hall in Gladstone (555 East 1st Street).
