[Busmgrs] A message from Ely Sanders: School Nurse Funding in Oregon Schools

Good afternoon business managers,

My name is Ely Sanders and I am working on the Governor's appointed task force on school nursing as a result of Senate Bill 698 (2015).  One of the taskforce's legislatively required tasks is to come up with new ways to fund school nursing.  At our first meeting two weeks ago, task force members asked ODE to gather information on how schools currently pay for their nursing services.  Below is a link to a brief survey that we would like filled out by as many districts as we can.   The timeline on this is pretty short as the next taskforce meeting is on April 1, so thank you in advance for your prompt attention and your cooperation with this survey.

The Task Force on School Nursing is a Governor-appointed task force as a result of Senate Bill 698 (2015) with the following objectives:



1.      Examine other health care funding sources, including the billing of students' health insurance for the costs of school health services provided at school, for the purpose of determining if schools may transition from using moneys received for education purposes to using moneys from the other health care funding sources to pay for school health services.

2.      Recommend sustainable funding sources for school health services that could be used to fund required school health screenings and to achieve the level of school nursing services described in ORS 336.201.



The Task Force has requested a summary of the current funding sources for school nursing in Oregon.  As such, ODE and OHA are asking you to answer a few survey questions.  The end result will be recommendations to the legislature on ways to increase and diversify state and other funding for school nurses.
