Hello everyone: Some of you may be very familiar with SB964 or you might know it by its other name: Strengthening, Preserving and Reunifying families (SPRF). For those of you less familiar, here is a recap:
In 2011 the Legislature recognized that severe trauma results when children are removed from their families and communities are better served when we improve permanency outcomes for children by allowing them to remain with their families and in their homes when appropriate and safe.
Key tenets of the bill are that by allowing families to remain intact while parents undergo mental health or addiction treatment, taking steps to move out of poverty by obtaining employment and housing or receiving family strengthening services will preserve child-parent bonds with improved outcomes for both children and families.
The legislature has funded start-up counties over the past 18 months and we are now getting ready to roll out to the rest of the state. Douglas County should be ready to roll out our local processes by late summer/early fall. The first step for our county will be to conduct focus groups in order to hear from stakeholders as we identify gaps in serving our families. We plan to use the next CAPP meeting as our first focus group and hope you will be able to attend. Once we have gathered information for focus groups across our community we will begin to put together a plan of addressing those gaps by creating contractual agreements with appropriate providers.
Please RSVP to Diane Pietrzak at diane.j.pietrzak at state.or.us<mailto:diane.j.pietrzak at state.or.us> if you would like to join us on August 21 at 3:30 at the United Way Office. We are looking forward to hearing from you.
