This is a great history lesson! Thanks for sharing everyone. I can tell you Ask Ontario’s (askON’s) story:

  *   Under Knowledge Ontario<http://knowledgeontario.ca/> (funded by Ontario Ministry of Culture<http://www.mtc.gov.on.ca/en/home.shtml> one time only, despite great effort for continued funding):
     *   September 2007 (before Ask Ontario), there was a chat room (by subject) tutor service for Secondary School students called 4ReSrch staffed by School Teacher-Librarians Sun-Thurs 5:30-9:30pm. It’s unclear when this service closed, but my guess is June 2008.
     *   January 2008, Ask Ontario launched with 4 different sectors/streams: public, public french, university, and (publicly funded<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_in_Ontario>) college libraries.
     *   June 2011, Ask Ontario transferred the university component of the service to OCUL<http://ocul.on.ca/node/2121>.
  *   Under Ontario Colleges Library Service<https://www.ocls.ca/>:
     *   June 2011-June 2012, Ask Ontario continued to be a public, public french, and college library service as Knowledge Ontario funds depleted. In June 2012, Ask Ontario found a new “home” in OCLS as an opt-in service<https://www.ocls.ca/services/opt-in-services> where partner college and public libraries paid cost-recovery service fees according to their FTE/Population served (via Ministry stats)
     *   April 2015, the public service closed due to funding issues because there weren’t enough partners to keep it going. (A sad loss for the “little” libraries who benefitted most.)
     *   April 2015 to present, we have a thriving college-only service that is seeing healthy partnership and traffic

Today, askON has chat, SMS, and proactive chat services.

Well if Kris is chiming in, then I’ll also contribute even if it’s for the sake of my own nostalgia.  :)  I just found buried in my files, as part of the “VR Adventure” that the State of Washington and King County created around 2005, the logos for the California and Illinois statewide services – attached.  I’m not sure how long the statewide California service lasted, but it was the successor to Q&A Café (one of the very first, if not the first, collaborative VR service), which operated in the Bay area and the 24/7 Reference service began by MCLS in Southern California.

Those years early in the last decade were fun times!

Hi everyone. I'd also like to clarify that AskColorado closed as of December 31, 2016, but AskAcademic moved over the Amigos as of Jan. 1, 2016 and is still running.

California had one a long time ago (initially started 24/7 Reference) but that went away and now there are a few libraries part of the QP Cooperative Libraries group.
