In an effort to educate and inform individuals residing in Oregon about the availability of State and Federal Tax Credits, The Oregon Department of Human Services would like your help to share the messaging below with those you serve.

Attached are also some resources to help folks file their taxes.

Tax season message

During the next few months, we can help individuals and families put more cash into their budgets by encouraging them to file a tax return to get all the cash credits they are eligible to receive.

Oregon and the federal government are offering significant cash credits that can only be accessed when filing a tax return, whether a person owes tax or not. If a person owes tax, the cash credits will reduce the tax and anything leftover will be refunded to the filer. ODHS is collaborating with the Oregon Department of Revenue to raise awareness about tax credits and connect people with resources for learning more or finding help to file.

You can help by spreading the word.

Many of the people we serve will qualify for these cash credits and filing help.  

  *   Oregon Kids Credit is a new child tax credit. Individuals and families making from $0 to $25,000 can get $1000 for each child under age six. Taxpayers with incomes between $25,000 and $30,000 are also eligible, though the credit is reduced. This credit is available even if you have never filed, are not required to file or have little or no taxable income.
  *   Other credits from Oregon and the federal government. The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is for those with low- to moderate-incomes. People who qualify for the federal EITC also can claim the Oregon Earned Income Credit (EIC).   *   Free, local tax preparation from community partners is available. Contact 211<https://www.211info.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery> Info to find help. Dial 2-1-1, text a zip code to 898211 or email help at 211info.org<mailto:help at 211info.org>. People also can also find a map of tax preparation services and free tax filing software options on the Department of Revenue website<https://www.oregon.gov/dor/programs/individuals/pages/get-free-tax-help.aspx?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery>.

We also want people to know now is a good time to catch up on filing for past years to make sure they haven’t left money on the table. Rebates offered during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency – from 2020 and 2021 - are still available for those who didn’t get all they qualified for during the pandemic.

Over the next few weeks, you’ll receive more information and tools for working with the people we serve. We’ll also be using other methods like social media, ONE Online account messages and a mailer to connect with our individuals and families. It can make a big difference for those we serve to even take a moment to say, “Are you planning to file a tax return this year? There are many cash credits for working and parenting adults that many people we work with can get. 211 Info can connect you with a free, local tax expert to help you file and see what cash you can get back.”
