TEACHERS' STUDY TOUR OF TURKEY AVAILABLE TO CONFERENCE ATTENDEES Grades 6-12!

Conference attendees are eligible to apply for fantastic 11 day Study Tour of Turkey (see attached) from July 13 - 24, 2009, compliments of the
Turkish Cultural Foundation of Washington, DC.  All expenses will be paid with the exception of a $600 registration fee and domestic airfare.

If you would like to apply please send your application (see attached) with your registration form (see attached) ASAP! The application deadline for the Study Tour of Turkey is April 18th, the day of the Conference.  Six teachers will be chosen from this pool of applicants and will join teachers from

The World Affairs Council of Oregon & The PSU Middle East Studies Center present:
Teach the Middle East Conference
for K - 12 Educators
April 18th , 2009
Portland State University

WHAT?
This timely Conference will open with a keynote panel of students from the Middle East and
continue with grade level curricular workshops and breakout sessions representing the
magnificent, ancient, strategic and controversial cultures of
Turkey, Iran, Israel and the Arab world.
This unique cultural immersion experience will also include a mid-day ethnic meal,
entertainment and a chance to visit both a Middle Eastern Market and
with members of organizations representing several Middle Eastern countries.
Breakout sessions will address religion, language, geography, literature, women, the family,
travel opportunities, opposing viewpoints and country specific art, history and culture.

WHERE & WHEN?
The Conference will take place at Portland State University on
April 18th, 2009 from 8:30 to 4:30.
The Keynote Panel & mid-day market, lunch and closing will take place in Hoffman Hall.
All breakout sessions will take place in Smith Memorial Union.

WHY?
Relations between the U.S. and the Middle East directly affect the lives of people the
world over. Understanding this region and its people is an essential part of the skills
and knowledge needed to live and work in an increasingly interdependent world.

PSU's Middle East Studies Center www.mesc.pdx.edu<http://www.mesc.pdx.edu/>
are partnering in a concerted effort to increase this much needed understanding.

HOW?
The cost for teachers and the general public is $25. Full-time students will pay $15.
