Workshops for scoring and developing reading work samples
The Class of 2012, this year's 10th graders, will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the Essential Skill of Reading in order to obtain a high school diploma. There are several options for students to demonstrate this proficiency, the most common being a score of 236 on the high school OAKS Reading/Literature assessment.
Another option is for students to produce two reading work samples that each meet a total score of 12 (3 traits on a 6 point scale), with no score lower than 3.
Reading Teacher Trainers are available around the state to offer workshops in both scoring and developing reading work samples. The following workshops may be scheduled:
1. 90 minute Overview of Reading Scoring Guide
2. Half day or Full day In-Depth Training on Reading Scoring Guide (with practice and a short "qualifying" exercise)
3. 90 minute Overview of Reading Work Sample/task development
4. Half day In-Depth Training on Developing Reading Work Samples/tasks, both stand-alone and curriculum-embedded. This workshop includes an opportunity for teachers to develop a reading task to use in their classroom.
