From Camilla.Hoexter at ode.state.or.us Wed Mar 24 08:49:40 2010 From: Camilla.Hoexter at ode.state.or.us (HOEXTER Camilla) Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2010 08:49:40 -0700 Subject: [Currdir] Oregon Students Receive Federal Funding for AP Tests Message-ID: SALEM - Superintendent of Public Schools Susan Castillo announced today that the Test Fee Program grant for 2009-2010 Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations for low-income students has been funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Students that meet the eligibility criteria are qualified to have their exam fee paid in full. The program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who take advanced placement tests and receive scores for which college academic credit is awarded. "Our goal is to give all students the opportunity to complete coursework that prepares them to be college and career ready when they graduate from high school," said Superintendent Susan Castillo. "Receiving this funding is great news for Oregon. It is important that we continue to make gains in preparing our students for success in college and beyond." The AP test fee program supports Superintendent Susan Castillo's priority for closing the achievement gap by providing opportunities, support, and resources to low-income students. Prior to receiving the grants, AP exams were funded for only 425 low-income students in Oregon. With the grant, it is projected that 4,625 low-income students will have their exams funded for the 2009-2010 school year. In 2009, Oregon was ranked 5th in the nation for increasing both access to AP courses and student over a five-year period. For more information about the Test Fee Program, contact ODE's program coordinator Andrea Morgan, (503) 947-5772, or go to: http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=884. The College Board is offering a Pre-AP strategies workshop for middle and high school teachers on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Northwest Regional ESD in Hillsboro, Oregon. The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is pleased to announce professional development opportunities for Oregon science educators, curriculum directors, and administrators to assist in implementing the 2009 Science Academic Content Standards. There is NO REGISTRATION FEE for the professional development. The regional professional development will be offered this summer (2010) and is similar to the Moving Math Education Forward workshops offered in the summer of 2009. Each regional opportunity will offer two days of working with the 2009 science standards and provide hands-on inquiry and engineering design sessions for science educators. There is an optional half day session in the morning on the third day for continued work with lesson and action planning, and an additional half day session in the afternoon of the third day for work with staff development standards and a grant opportunity. For more information including dates and locations, to access the registration packet, and the online registration system, visit www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=2906. The number of participants per session will be limited, so register early. Registration will close as soon as capacity is reached or on April 15. Ocean Literacy and Awareness: Needs Assessment Survey The Ocean Awareness and Literacy Action Coordination Team (ACT) of the West Coast Governors' Agreement on Ocean Health (WCGAOH) is requesting input from educators, administrators, program directors, or resource specialists who are or may be interested in incorporating marine topics into your curriculum or program. They survey results will give WCGAOH a better sense of how they can help educators bring ocean literacy and awareness into their classrooms. The goal is to have students understand the relevance of the oceans and their watersheds by the time they graduate from high school. The WCGAOH was signed by Governors Schwarzenegger, Kulongoski and Gregoire in 2008. Under this agreement, California, Oregon and Washington have worked together and consulted with federal agency leads and stakeholders to improve the health of our ocean and coastal resources along the West Coast. Action Coordination Teams were created to address activities in the Action Plan. These ACTs are comprised of representatives with technical expertise from each of the three states. You can find more information about the WCGAOH at http://westcoastoceans.gov/ To complete the survey, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VMPR7QX The survey should take about 15 minutes and closes on March 31st. Your input is extremely important, and we appreciate the time you take to critically comment on our questions. By completing this survey, you are helping us further the vision of an ocean-literate society. In addition, survey respondents will be entered into a drawing to receive a prize package (one per state), which will include, two passes to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and a free back-wing tour of the Hatfield Marine Science Center (Oregon). Each winner will also receive assorted ocean-related books, curricula, and DVDs; and many other fabulous prizes. Thank you for participating and in helping us bring ocean, coastal, and watershed topics into the broader K-12 educational arena.
