[Currdir] Oregon Students Receive Federal Funding for AP Tests

SALEM - Superintendent of Public Schools Susan Castillo announced today that the Test Fee Program grant for 2009-2010 Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations for low-income students has been funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Students that meet the eligibility criteria are qualified to have their exam fee paid in full. The program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who take advanced placement tests and receive scores for which college academic credit is awarded.

"Our goal is to give all students the opportunity to complete coursework that prepares them to be college and career ready when they graduate from high school," said Superintendent Susan Castillo. "Receiving this funding is great news for Oregon. It is important that we continue to make gains in preparing our students for success in college and beyond."

The AP test fee program supports Superintendent Susan Castillo's priority for closing the achievement gap by providing opportunities, support, and resources to low-income students. Prior to receiving the grants, AP exams were funded for only 425 low-income students in Oregon. With the grant, it is projected that 4,625 low-income students will have their exams funded for the 2009-2010 school year. In 2009, Oregon was ranked 5th in the nation for increasing both access to AP courses and student over a five-year period.
